Cayetano inquires
about turf

Gov. Ben Cayetano said he is holding a meeting today "with all the parties" for an update on the status of getting Fieldturf into Aloha Stadium.

"The meeting reflects ... a desire to understand fully what's happening and why things are not going perhaps as quickly as I thought they could go," said Cayetano, who supports replacing the current AstroTurf surface. That would appease the NFL, which wants either Fieldturf or grass at Aloha Stadium, which hosts the Pro Bowl.

The Stadium Authority authorized installation of Fieldturf last month, but progress has been slow with the Stadium Authority-imposed deadline of Aug. 2 fast approaching.

Fieldturf CEO John Gilman estimated it would take two weeks to put the turf in, but work also needs to be done to prepare the stadium surface before installation.

Cayetano said he thinks the deadline can be extended.

"As I understand it, most of the work has been assessment to determine what has to be done. I don't know if Fieldturf has run into any kind of engineering problem. That's the only thing that would hold us back," Cayetano said.

"The Aug. 2 date is not a hard and fast date. It's something that can be adjusted. I think that the Stadium Authority set that date because they wanted some time in between the installation and the first game to make whatever adjustments they could. So there's some give in that."
