DMC’s DJ regionals set

Further proof that DJ culture has reached an all-time high in the islands: The 17th annual DMC American Battleground DJ competition will include a regional heat here in Honolulu as part of its 13-city competition to find America's top turntablist.

DMC, which began in the early '80s as a remix service for DJs, is now the world's largest DJ organization, boasting chapters in 28 countries. Its annual contest is considered the most prestigious of all DJ battles. Many of the world's most noted turntablists (QBert, Cash Money, Mixmaster Mike, etc.) have made their reputations through DMC's annual competitions.

For those who wonder how the islands' top turntablists fare on a national level, attendees at last year's trials have reported that Hawaii's DJ Deception of Nocturnal Sound Krew was barely outpointed by eventual United States champion DJ Klever in a hotly contested and controversial decision. Saturday night's contest is a preliminary to the U.S. and world finals, and will feature a performance by three-time World Champion DJ Craze.
