Baywatch goes to screen
while star’s in rehab

NO sooner had word come down that the new "Baywatch" movie was definitely on than star David Hasselhoff entered the Betty Ford Clinic. Location scouts have been scouring around looking for locales and the plan calls to reunite Hasselhoff with the, uh, biggies from previous "Baywatch" shows, Pamela Anderson and Yasmine Bleeth, plus Stacy Kamano and Jason Momoa, both of whom have been quiet on the entertainment front since "Baywatch Hawaii." As for Greg Bonann, who produced the latest show, he's totally out of the picture ...

WHO else would go to England to surf than ex-NFL'er John Wilbur, though he denies it's because his bell was wrung one too many times. He'd read in this column on several occasions of the incredible Gidleigh Park Hotel in Devon, and since he'd be passing through that county on his way to the surfing spot in Harlyn Bay, Cornwall, decided to stop for a look. He knew that former Punahou student Paul Henderson and wife Kay owned the mock-Tudor resort, but wasn't ready for the way it stands out in the middle of a National Park. Wilbur knows Paul's brother, local businessman Bill Henderson, and got directions to the place. With him was fellow Punahou alum Diane Wilbur Smith and her two girls, Kayley and Kirsty. All were blown away during their brief visit there. Wilbur recalled my desire expressed years ago to write a book called "Murder at Gidleigh Park," situated as remotely as it is. Hotelier Henderson told Wilbur, "We're Gosford Park without the murder." ...

Healthy 'Cripple'

MANOA Valley Theatre has put together a fine production of Martin McDonagh's Irish play, "The Cripple of Inishmaan." Director Vanita Rae Smith assembled a first-rate cast, and manages to bring out both the inherent humor and heart-wrenching pathos of the script. I found myself smiling at all the personal peccadilloes of the characters. And while I hesitate to single out anyone in such a uniform cast, I'm still chuckling over the 90ish poteen drinkin' "mammy" as portrayed by Martha Walstrum. Don't miss this one if you're a lover of theater ...

FROM Canton, Ohio, home of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, comes word from Kyle Wirth, who used to announce all the Monster Truck shows at Aloha Stadium and numerous TV ads locally. He now hosts a show in Ohio talking with NFL football players and coaches, past and present. Wirth says he keeps up on things in Hawaii through reading this column online ...

West Coasting

GUITARIST Jim West lives two musical lives. A lover of slack key, West took in Bankoh's Kiho'alu Festival on Maui at the invitation of organizer Milton Lau. West gave Lau permission to use two cuts from his first slack-key CD, "Coconut Hat" for a compilation CD coming up. After leaving Maui, West returned to L.A. rehearsing with Weird Al Yankovic for a week of shows at the Orange County Fair. He's Weird Al's musical director as well as a slack-key artist. West also is starting on the music for the Daytona Speedway Visitor Center's IMAX movie and producing tracks for Japan singer Mari Iijima. West is wild ...
