Yokozuna Musashimaru
wins on opening
day at Nagoya sumo

NAGOYA (AP) - Yokozuna Musashimaru posted an easy win over komusubi Tosanoumi on Sunday to open the 15-day Nagoya Grand Sumo Tournament on a winning note.

Musashimaru, looking for his third straight Emperor's Cup, quickly took control in the day's final bout and drove Tosanoumi out over the straw ridge in a matter of seconds. Fellow yokozuna Takanohana is sitting out his seventh consecutive tournament due to a knee injury.

Philippe Troussier, the former coach of Japan's national soccer team, was among the capacity crowd at Aichi Prefectural Gymnasium.

In other major bouts, ozeki Tochiazuma, showing no signs of a sore left arm, wasted little time in forcing out No. 2 maegashira Takamisakari to start the tournament off on the right foot.

Fellow ozeki Chiyotaikai came charging out of the blocks and bulldozed towering top maegashira Kotonowaka out into the first row of seats.

Ozeki Kaio, nursing a sore left shoulder, was the only casualty among the ozeki ranks after he was sent flying out of the ring by top-ranked maegashira Tochinonada. Kaio landed on his heavily-bandaged shoulder and was slow getting up after the bout.

In a battle of Mongolian grapplers, sekiwake Asashoryu deployed a series of powerful arm thrusts to force Kyokushuzan back and over the edge in a matter of seconds.

Asashoryu is bidding to become the first Mongolian to be promoted to ozeki - sumo's second highest rank - and a strong performance in the Nagoya tournament would solidify his prospects.
