96.5% of public school seniors graduate

The Class of 2002 saw 96.5 percent of public high school seniors graduate.

The state Department of Education said 10,669 students graduated out of a total 11,059 seniors who were enrolled at the end of the school year. Last school year, 10,323 seniors, or 96.7 percent, graduated.

Most of those graduating, 10,452 students, earned diplomas; 217 others received certificates of completion by meeting the requirements of their Individually Prescribed Programs.

In addition, 3,280 graduates, or almost 30 percent of all seniors, earned a Board of Education Recognition Diploma, a more demanding recognition that requires two additional credits and a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher.

Regular DOE schools with 100 percent completion rates were Anuenue, six graduates; Roosevelt, 337; Nanakuli, 182; Olomana, six; Hilo, 380; Kohala, 70; Konawaena, 191; Laupahoehoe, 17; Hana, 29; Niihau, five; and the Hawaii Center for the Deaf & the Blind, five.

Honolulu police and Fire Department rescue personnel responded yesterday evening to an accident involving a car that had been driven into Kapalama Stream. The lone male occupant appeared to be unhurt. Police arrested the man for driving under the influence.



St. Andrew's Priory gets foundation grant

A Kentucky-based educational foundation has given an $11,860 grant to St. Andrew's Priory School for the preservation of the school's historic documents and oral history.

"Thanks to the generous grant of the Margaret Hall Foundation, the photos and oral history of the school will be preserved for future generations to enjoy and learn from," said Caroline Ward Oda, head of school at St. Andrew's Priory School.

St. Andrew's was founded more than 135 years ago as an Episcopal school for girls.

Margaret Hall Foundation supports education in secondary, private, all-female and coed programs.

Truck runs over, kills Maui woman bicyclist

A woman bicyclist died this morning after a truck ran over her in Wailuku.

Both the woman and the truck were making a right turn from Waiehu Beach Road onto Lower Main Road about 7:29 a.m. when she got caught under the truck's right rear tire, police Sgt. Jeraul Pladera said.

No other details of the accident were available this morning as police were investigating the cause of the accident.

Big Isle woman facing marijuana charges

A 46-year-old Mountain View woman is facing federal drug charges after police discovered an indoor marijuana growing operation on her property.

Police arrested the woman last Friday at the conclusion of a five-day marijuana eradication effort, then turned her over to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.

The eradication netted 14,425 marijuana plants in Puna, Hilo and North Hilo. The plants ranged in size from seedlings to plants 6 feet tall.

Fire destroys Molokai Poi Shop

Fire investigators plan to return to The Molokai Poi Shop in Kaunakakai today to determine the cause of the fire that destroyed the shop yesterday morning.

The taro cooker was left on and fire began in that area about 10:21 a.m., said Assistant Chief Greg Chong Kee of the Molokai Fire Department. No one was in the building at the time.

"The structure was still standing but it was totally gutted," Kee said. The 16-by 30-foot building stands just outside of town on Manila Road.

Maui brush fire burns dozen acres of pasture

A brush fire in a remote area of lower Waiohuli scorched about 12 acres of pasture, authorities said.

Three firefighter crews from Kula, Makawao and Kahului responded to the blaze Saturday, but the area was so remote, it took two helicopters making water drops to bring it under control, Assistant Fire Chief Gordon Cordeiro said.

The fire broke out under a Maui Electric co. power transmission line. The alarm was received at 11:40 a.m., and the fire was reported under control at 3:21 p.m.

Couple arrested in theft and forgery

Big Island police have arrested and charged a couple who wanted on several criminal offenses.

Aaron Becker and Elona Keanini, both 25, were arrested Wednesday. Becker was charged with one count each of unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle, theft and forgery. Keanini was charged with two counts of theft, two counts of forgery and one count of contempt.

South Kohala police had issued a news bulletin last week asking the public to be on the lookout for the couple in connection with suspected theft, forgeries and fraudulent use of a credit card.

Alleged sex assaults lead to man's arrest

Police arrested a 23-year-old man Saturday in connection with report of at least two sexual assaults of a 14 -year-old girl between December and March.

The alleged attacks occurred at beaches on the Waianae Coast, police said. Police expect to seek charges of first- and third-degree sexual assault.

Kailua man finds his mailbox blown up

Police said they did not know what kind of explosive device was used to blow up a mailbox at a Dune Circle house Saturday night.

A man who lives at the Kailua house reported hearing a loud explosion between 10:30 and 11:30 Saturday night but thought it was coming from another street, police said. Police said they have no suspects.

CENTRAL OAHU

3 children arrested in Kaneohe burglary

Three boys were arrested and released Thursday for allegedly burglarizing a Kaneohe residence twice in three days.

The boys, ages 10, 11 and 12, all of Kaneohe, are suspected of entering a residence on Keaahala Road on Tuesday, taking several items, and returning Thursday between 6:45 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

One suspect also helped himself to food, police said.

Man, 25, arrested for threats with bat

Police arrested a 25-year-old Honolulu man at 2:30 a.m. yesterday after he allegedly swung a baseball bat at someone's head twice and hit parked cars instead.

A 25-year-old Aiea man reported that a man approached him in the parking lot outside the Shack in Mililani Shopping Center after a traffic incident. The Aiea man said the man threatened him with bodily harm before swinging a bat, police said.

When officers arrived, they found the suspect feigning sleep in his car, police said.

The suspect was arrested for terroristic threatening and criminal property damage without incident.

NORTH SHORE

Girl, 12, admits taking car of mother's friend

Police arrested a 12-year-old Waialua girl after she allegedly stole a car belonging to her mother's friend.

The 20-year-old owner of the car reported at 9:30 a.m. Saturday that her car and her keys were missing.

She learned later that her friend's daughter admitted to taking the car and that a witness saw the girl driving it, police said.

The car was located on a street nearby, and the girl was arrested. The woman wants to press charges, police said.

Tourist is airlifted from Manoa Falls trail

A visitor from Washington state was airlifted from Manoa Falls trail yesterday after she slipped and bumped her head.

The 72-year-old woman was about three-quarters into the trail when she fell. She complained of tenderness to her neck and did not feel she could walk out, said Honolulu Fire Capt. Richard Soo. The woman was taken to a hospital for a checkup.

Boy allegedly uses knife to threaten girl

Police arrested a 10-year-old Kalihi boy after he allegedly threatened a female schoolmate with a Swiss Army knife.

Police said the incident occurred last Monday around 2 p.m. along Lanakila Avenue near Liliha Street.

Police did not reveal what school the boy and girl, 11, attend. The boy was later released pending further investigation.

WAIKIKI

5 arrested at hotel for drug and gun offenses

Police arrested four men and a woman in connection with trespassing, firearm and drug-related offenses at a Waikiki hotel.Police said hotel security workers were questioning the suspects about trespassing at 7:30 p.m. last Monday when security found a rifle in one of the men's bags. Security also found "numerous glass pipes" containing what appeared to be residue from crystal methamphetamine, police said.
