Winemakers to team with
renowned chefs on Lanai

Star-Bulletin Staff

Winemakers join the foodmakers as the Lanai Visiting Artists Program ramps up to include a series of wine-tasting seminars.

For several years, the Manele Bay Hotel and the Lodge at Koele have hosted visits by internationally known chefs who hold cooking demonstrations and put on two nights of signature dinners. This summer, master sommelier Chuck Furuya has selected winemakers and distributors whose wines pair best with each chef's cuisine.

First up is Brent Wiest, director of Cellars International, a leading importer of fine German wines. His wines will be paired with the Moroccan cuisine of chef Rafih Benjelloun of the Imperial Fez restaurants in Atlanta and Vail, Colo., July 13 and 14 at Manele Bay.

Benjelloun will prepare prix-fixe dinner menus both nights, with courses paired to Cellars' German whites. He'll also host a cooking demonstration at 3:30 p.m. July 14. A wine tasting will be held at 4 p.m. July 13.

Call 800-321-4666.

Also on the schedule:

Aug. 17, 18: Rick Tramonto of Tru in Chicago is paired with Justin and Deborah Baldwin of Justin Vineyards & Winery in Paso Robles, Calif.

Sept. 14, 15: Lee Hefter of Spago, Beverly Hills, paired with Jim Clendenen of Au Bon Climat of the Santa Maria Valley in California.

Oct. 12, 13: Josiah Citrin of Melisse, Los Angeles, paired with Julie Martinelli of Martinelli Winery of California's Russian River valley.
