Sasada sizzles with 69
at PGA Club Pro tourney

Kahului's Brian Sasada fired a 69 yesterday in the first round of the PGA Club Professional Championship in Louisville, Ky.

Sasada is tied with five other golfers for second place, one shot behind Sean Farren.

Sasada's 32 on the front nine was matched by only one other player. He had six birdies and a double bogey on the sixth.

"The sixth hole was the only hiccup I had," Sasada said. "I put my tee shot to the left and couldn't get out of the rough. But I'm in perfect position now.

"Tomorrow I'll come out and play and see what happens."

Sasada carded a 37 on the final nine holes.

The top 25 finishers earn a berth in the PGA Championship, which is Aug. 15-18 in Chaska, Minn.

Rogers and Scott sneak into main draw

GSTAAD, Switzerland >> Todd Rogers and Sean Scott beat Francisco Alvarez and Juan Rosell of Cuba in three games yesterday to claim one of the last berths into the main draw of the Swiss Open.

Scott, a former University of Hawaii player, and partner Rogers avenged last week's loss to the Cuban team in Germany.

The Americans beat Alvarez and Rosell 19-21, 27-25, 16-14, after getting past Mattias Magnusson and Robert Svensson of Sweden 21-15, 21-18, earlier in the day.

Hawaii's Stein Metzger and Kevin Wong had already clinched a spot in the 32-team main draw.

In the women's main draw, Danalee Bragado and Rachel Wacholder split a pair of matches yesterday and are tied for second in their pool.

Bragado, of Honolulu, and Wacholder beat the German team of Andrea Ahmann and Jana Vollmer 21-17, 21-19, before losing to Dianne DeNecochea and Barbra Fontana 21-17, 18-21, 18-16.

Holly McPeak and Elaine Youngs won twice yesterday to extend their winning streak to 17 matches. They have won all three AVP events this year.

The Kalani High School alum was 10-0 with a 2.33 ERA and 115 strikeouts this season. He finished his career with 510 strikeouts -- fifth best in NCAA history.

The Midwest Region primarily covers the Big 12 and Missouri Valley conferences.
