On the heels of a five-year $116 million fund-raising campaign, the University of Hawaii Foundation is gearing up for an even more ambitious campaign to begin later this year.

In the first half of this year, the university's fund-raising arm has brought in $16.4 million, according to Robin Campaniano, who becomes chairman of the foundation board July 1.

Under the direction of UH President Evan Dobelle, the foundation has already started planning future fund-raising attempts, Campaniano said.

"We believe this is an extremely opportune time to launch another fund-raising campaign," he said.

In 1997 the foundation thought a $100 million campaign was out of reach, Campaniano said.

"The figure that we're trying to reach for now (the next campaign), we're trying to instill the same type of reach and yet incur the kind of enthusiasm that I think we managed to get the last time," he said.

Of the $116 million raised, $52.9 million was in cash. Gifts in kind accounted for $18.9 million, endowments totaled $15.5 million and deferred gifts amounted to $29.1 million.

The UH Foundation report was one of several status updates given before Board of Regents committees yesterday.

Allan Ah San, who is in charge of the university's capital improvements projects, reported that the university will continue its community meetings to determine a site for the UH-West Oahu campus.

Since beginning to search for a site in downtown Kapolei last fall, he said community members have expressed concerns about traffic and parking, and whether the sites will be large enough for the long-term future of the campus.

A final decision on the site will be made in the fall, he said.

In Kakaako, Ah San said the work on the Health and Wellness Center is progressing six days ahead of schedule.

The plans for the administration and research buildings will be done in the coming weeks. Groundbreaking is still planned for the fall, he said.
