The new Hawaii athletics director could be named as early as Friday, when the UH Board of Regents meets.

"The interviews are going well," said Paul Costello, a UH vice president who is a member of the selection advisory committee. "We hope to have a decision soon. It's down to the final wire.

"(Manoa interim Chancellor) Deane Neubauer could make a decision imminently, discuss it with President (Evan) Dobelle and we'll have a name to forward to the board at Friday's meeting," Costello added.

Costello and several others on the committee just returned from Dallas where they interviewed candidates for the job.

"It's narrowed down pretty much," Costello said. "But it's still a bit fluid."

UH has not released any names of candidates. But several sources indicate that former Hawaii and Arizona football coach Dick Tomey and current UH associate athletics director Jim Donovan were still being considered. They were interviewed before last weekend, in Hawaii.

"Any comment on this whole issue needs to come from the university," Tomey said.

Said Donovan: "I'm not sure what will happen, but I know it will be in the best interest of the university, and that's all I've ever wanted for the last 21 years I've been here."

Also, sources in Alabama and Montana confirmed that Alabama-Birmingham athletics director Herman Frazier and Montana athletics director Wayne Hogan either applied or were approached about the job, and both were among around 20 finalists whose resumes were reviewed by the committee two weeks ago.

It is not known if either or both were interviewed over the weekend in Dallas.

Hogan has said he is not interested in the UH job, according to a source in Montana.

Frazier was contacted by Eastman & Beaudine, a firm UH is using in the search for a replacement for the retiring Hugh Yoshida, according to the Birmingham News.

The paper also reported yesterday that Frazier had not been interviewed by UH.

Wyoming athletics director Lee Moon, whose name came up earlier in the search, told the Star-Bulletin on Saturday he is not a candidate for the UH job.
