Erika Nash joins Collins
as UNLV assistant coach

The coaching pipeline between Hawaii and UNLV continues this week when Erika Nash begins her job as the second assistant for the Lady Rebels volleyball team.

Nash, who played at University High and Bradley University, is the second coach with island ties to be hired by former Wahine all-American Deitre Collins. Collins hired former Rainbow player and assistant Matt Johnson in April to be her first assistant.

Nash is the daughter of Hawaii associate head men's basketball coach Bob Nash. Erika graduated from Bradley in 1999 with a degree in graphic design and has been working on a master's degree in counseling at UH.

"I'm continuing those Hawaii ties," said Collins, entering her seventh season at UNLV. "Being a coach's daughter, Erika has the work ethic and understands the commitment. A lot of young people come out of school, thinking they might want to coach but they aren't sure. Erika knows she want to be a coach."

"This is something I've always wanted to do but never thought that I'd get the chance," said Nash, who leaves tomorrow. "I feel very fortunate to have this opportunity."

Seasiders put 7 on All-American team

Seven members of Brigham Young-Hawaii's national champion tennis teams have been named First-Team All-American by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.

Five women's players are on the team led by Petra Gaspar and Kellie Taguchi, who were named to the singles and doubles team. Adrienn Hegedus was named to the singles team while Tagifano So'onalole-Taosoga and Tomoko Sukegawa were selected for their doubles play.

Jan Krejci and doubles partner Peter Madarassy represented BYUH on both the singles and doubles All-American teams.

Viloria to fight for first World title tonight

Waipahu boxer Brian Viloria will take on Francisco Soto (13-5) today at the Del Mar Fair in Calif.

The fight will be televised as the co-main event 4 p.m. HST on ESPN2's Tuesday Night Fights.

The WBC World Youth Flyweight title will be on the line, possibly giving Viloria (7-0, 5 KOs) his first world title in just under a year as a professional.

"This is a very serious opponent," Gary Gittelsohn, Viloria's manager, said. "Soto has a brutal left hook and two of his losses were career robberies. it is a calculated risk to let Brian fight him."

Viloria was ranked No. 9 in the North American Boxing Council's latest rankings, but he could drop out as quickly as he entered.

World title holders are ineligible for ranking by the NABF.

Aloha Stadium parking may increase

The Stadium Authority voted to increase parking fees for passenger vehicles from $3 to $5 and for buses and large trucks from $10 to $15 for all events other than high school or grade school events.

Stadium licensees would also have to increase their insurance coverage from $500,000 to $1 million if yesterday's vote by the Stadium Authority is upheld.
