Group seeks volunteers to help homeless children

The Institute for Human Services Inc. is looking for volunteers for its Summer Fun program for children whose families are homeless.

IHS, Oahu's emergency homeless shelter, will run the program for about 40 children from next Monday to July 26 at the IHS Women and Families Shelter at 546 Kaaahi St. in Honolulu.

Volunteers are needed to plan, organize and carry out activities, field trips and programs and are asked to commit to at least eight hours for each of the six weeks.

They are required to be a positive role model for the children, play games, sing songs, guide arts-and-crafts activities and, in general, have fun while teaching life lessons.

Orientation, training and planning will be held from today through Friday from 9 a.m. to noon daily. For more information or to schedule an interview, contact Catherine Graham at 537-2724 or e-mail catherineg@ihs-hawaii.org.

Isle humpback council to hold public meeting

The Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary's advisory council will hold a meeting Wednesday at Honolulu Airport.

The meeting will be held on the seventh floor of the airport's Interisland Conference Center from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Agenda items include a presentation by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and updates on the sanctuary's recent activities.

The meeting is free and open to the public. Testimonies may be given at the meeting, but written copies of the testimony must be received 24 hours prior. Public asked to nominate librarians for award

The Hawaii Library Foundation is inviting the public to nominate their favorite public librarian for the annual Public Librarian of the Year award.

Nomination forms are available at all public libraries and Borders Books and Music stores. The deadline is July 15.

To be eligible, nominees must be employed a minimum of five years by the Hawaii State Public Library System and hold a master's degree in library science or equivalent.

The Public Librarian of the Year will receive a $1,000 cash prize from the Library Foundation and a $500 Borders store certificate.

The winner will be announced Nov. 20 in an awards ceremony at the Hawaii State Library.

Motorbike accident kills man, 23, near Hickam

A 23-year-old man who died Saturday after crashing his motorcycle near Hickam Air Force Base's Main Gate was identified as Kevin Barnachea of Ewa Beach and an Army soldier.

Police said speed was a reason for the crash as Barnachea failed to negotiate a curve on Nimitz Highway outside O'Malley Gate at Hickam Air Force Base about 7 p.m. Saturday.

Barnachea had just left the base and was heading north on Nimitz Highway when he crashed into a concrete median and landed in a grass embankment on the other side of the highway.

Barnachea, who was wearing a helmet, suffered severe leg lacerations, police said. He was taken to Tripler Army Medical Center in critical condition and died later Saturday.

Kaimuki woman, 84, ID'd as parking-lot victim

Sueko Hamai, of Kaimuki, has been identified as the 84-year-old woman who died after she was knocked to the ground accidentally as she stepped out of a car.

Hamai, who died Friday, was a passenger in a car driven by her 85-year-old husband. She was getting out of the car when her husband was reversing to leave a parking lot. The car door knocked her down, causing her to hit her head on the ground.

Injured climber airlifted off Diamond Head

Honolulu fire rescue crews airlifted an injured man off Diamond Head after he fell more than 100 feet yesterday morning.

Fire officials said the victim was one of four men who had decided to climb the crater from the outside, above Makalei Place off Diamond Head Road. The man's injury was reported to fire crews at 5:30 a.m.

Fire officials said the victim suffered extensive injuries to his left leg and hip. The other three hikers climbed down uninjured.

Police seek suspect who took man's moped

Police were looking for a man who robbed another man of his moped Saturday night.

Police said the robber approached an acquaintance near Dillingham Boulevard and North King Street and asked him for a cigarette at about 10:30 p.m.

The suspect then pulled up his shirt, showing what appeared be the end of a handgun, police said. Both men got on the moped and rode in Kalihi and then to Salt Lake, police said.

The robber then ordered the victim to get off or he would be shot, police said.

Police described the suspect as a man in his 20s, 5-feet-8, weighing 180 pounds.

Black Hawk helicopters help douse Kupukupu fire

One of two Black Hawk helicopters from the 25th Infantry Division Schofield Barracks, Oahu, dipped a 660-gallon bucket into the ocean Friday off Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. They are among five choppers helping to douse hot spots and flare-ups in the 3,660-acre Kupukupu fire in the park. About 140 federal firefighters from Hawaii and the mainland have contained 60 percent of the fire, according to park ranger Mardie Lane. The fire was ignited by a lava flow from Kilauea Volcano on May 17. The crews are trying to prevent the fire from spreading to a nearby rain forest.




Girl critically injured after being thrown from truck

A 16-year-old girl was in critical condition at Queen's Medical Center after she was thrown from a bed of a pickup truck on Kauai Saturday night.

Police said a teenage boy, who has no license, was driving a truck on Kaumualii Highway about 10 p.m. with two 16-year-old passengers in the truck bed. Police said the passengers, a boy and a girl, were ejected from the truck and hit the pavement when the driver made a U-turn in the Mana area on Kauai's west side.

Both victims were transported to Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waimea. The boy was listed in fair condition. Police said the girl was flown to Queen's in critical condition.

Man, 40, dies while spear-diving on Maui

A 40-year-old Haiku man died yesterday while spear-diving with his friends in Hoolawa Bay on the northeastern shore of Maui, police said.

Police identified the victim as Kevin "Hoku" Malaqui.

A friend found Malaqui floating lifeless on the bottom of the bay about 1:10 p.m., police said. An autopsy is scheduled to determine the cause of death.

Information sought on Kona home burglary

Kona police want information about a burglary on May 31 at a residence in the Kona Scenic Subdivision in Kealakekua.

Police said burglars (or a burglar) broke into the home and stole a variety of items valued at more than $19,000 between 1:15 and 6:30 p.m.

Police said the thieves entered the home by removing a screen and opening a sliding glass window. The thieves then took two attache cases from an office on the first floor and rummaged through drawers on the second floor. They stole several rings, necklaces, watches, a small koa bowl, a man's wallet and other items, police said.

Laie man, 26, accused of breaking woman's jaw

A 26-year-old Laie man was arrested for assault this morning for allegedly punching a woman and breaking her jaw.

Police said the victim, a 31-year-old woman, went to the rear of the Kahuku Sugar Mill at 11:50 last night where the man punched her. A passerby interrupted the assault, police said.

Patrol officers later arrested the suspect at his residence.

WINDWARD OAHU

2 men with baseball bats accused in Kailua robbery

Two men wielding baseball bats robbed two 18-year-old men in a Kailua parking lot last night, police said.

The victims were waiting at 40 Aulike St. for their friends to get off work when they were robbed about 10:05 p.m. One victim was robbed of $20 while the robbers took a neck chain from the other victim.
