TOWER VIEW IS A SIGHT FOR TOURISTS ONLY

Once again, kamaaina get the short end of the stick. Aloha Tower reopened its observation deck this week, but a closer look at the new security measures show that most local folks still won't be able to enjoy the view.

Having a security guard downstairs checking bags is a great idea, as is limiting the number of people on the deck at any one time. But restricting visits to the hours of 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.? Anyone with a normal work schedule will not be able to visit during the week. Because of the new security measures, I can't take in a sunset after getting off work or enjoy the city lights from a well-known Honolulu landmark.

But hey, at least the tourists get to check it out. They would probably spend more money at the shops and restaurants than I would anyway. It would be nice to check out "Happy Hour at the Tower" and take in a sunset at the tower itself. Too bad the deck will be closed.
