Maori rapper among
highlights of school
fund-raiser Saturday

SATURDAY NIGHT provides a rare glimpse into the mind of a Maori rap artist during a fund-raiser for the Halau Ku Mana New Century Public School.

Dean "Te Kupu" Hapeta is a rapper and filmmaker from Aotearoa, in town to screen his "rapumentary" entitled "Ngatahi: Know the Links." According to a press release, "Ngatahi" takes viewers into "a zone where hip-hop, poetry and activism exist as one."

Doors open to the Saturday movie screening at 6 p.m. at the University of Hawaii Center for Hawaiian Studies. Admission is free, but event organizers hope those who go also check out a slam session of music and poetry starting at 9 p.m. at Hale Noa (766 Kapahulu Ave.). Local spoken-word poets Imaikalani Kalahele, Steve Kealoha Wong and Katana will participate, and Hoku Award winner Ernie Cruz Jr. will perform as well.

A portion of the proceeds from awa sales at the slam session will go toward sending Halau Ku Mana's students on a trip to Kahoolawe. Call 595-9082 for more information ...

THIRTEEN TALENTED women take to the stage in tomorrow night's Miss Hawaii 2002 competition, to be televised live on KFVE starting at 7:30 p.m. The Star-Bulletin's own Vakisha Coleman is one of the contestants vying for the crown, as is my former high school classmate Liane Mark. Tickets are $35 and are available by calling 988-8088. Best of luck to all ...

WILL SOMEONE please explain to me the need for so many lounge nights on this rock? Two more debut this weekend, one at Hard Rock Cafe and the other at Sansei Seafood Restaurant & Sushi Bar.

Matty Liu and Darren Carroll are set to kick off "The Chemistry Lounge" at the Hard Rock on Saturday night, with DJ Jedi and DJ Evil scratching wax and giveaways from M.A.C, Miken Clothing, Sanuk Sandals, FHM magazine and Movie Line magazine. Call 941-0424 for details.

Also starting up this weekend at Sansei is the "Martini Lounge," hosted by the fine people at D-Vinyl Entertainment. The $2 martini prices should keep you in a good mood; and as usual, Sansei's pupu menu is half-price after 10 p.m. Both Sansei and Hard Rock Cafe are for the 21-and-older crowd, so all you 18-to-20-year-olds have to find someplace else to lounge this weekend ...

EVEN THOUGH Hawaii is Bud Light territory through and through, the Boston Beer Co. thinks Honolulu is a good test market for its newest beer, Sam Adams Light. The company claims Sam Adams Light is the only light beer to use nothing more than the four classic ingredients of beer: water, yeast, hops and malt. You can taste this liquid courage yourself at most bars around town that already serve Sam Adams, or look for the brew on store shelves beginning July 15. Other markets joining Honolulu as the first to get Sam Adams Light: Chicago, New York City, Phoenix and San Diego ...

CAN'T AFFORD the cost of Saturday's pay-per-view heavyweight championship boxing match between Lennox Lewis and Mike Tyson? Then get down to Pipeline Cafe and enjoy the fight on a pair of 20-foot screens and 25 television sets around the club. Bud Light bottles are only $3, and a $1 taco bar will be up and running as well. The fight starts at 3 p.m. Saturday, and Pipeline recommends reservations to get a good view of the action. Call 479-6001 to place yours ...
