Murphy sails sports eatery
to success with first party

WITH Don Murphy taking over All-Star Hawaii in Waikiki, it looked like it was full speed ahead on his opening night. He got off to a quick start by hosting some 250 collegiate sailors, coaches and supporters from the 28 schools competing in the 2002 College Sailing Championships. Live showings of the NBA championship are expected to draw good crowds of sports fans to the All Star and its plethora of TV sets, and working through promoter Tom Moffatt, Murph also is showing the Lennox Lewis-Mike Tyson Pay-TV fight Saturday, which should be a real slug-out. It's $30 to get in, cheaper than watching it at home ... City Councilman Duke Bainum showed up at All-Star Hawaii to present Murphy with a City Council Certificate of Appreciation for supporting the sailing championships and when a colleague of Murph's apologized for an error involving his invitation, Bainum quipped, "Considering the last few days, that's really small change." ...

WHEN Kelly Boy Delima of the group Kapena appeared with Perry & Price at their Hanohano Room show, he offered some fatherly advice for those readying to celebrate Father's Day: "We all know who wears the pants in the family," said Delima. "It's the Dads. But it's the Moms who tell us when we can take them off and when to put 'em back on." Smart lad, Kelly Boy ... Danny Kaleikini isn't just a dad -- he's a granddad too. He was spotted in Collector Maniacs on Waialae, a store dealing with Kikaida, anime and now, of course, "Star Wars" memorabilia. Danny was picking out some action figures from the latest movie to give to his grandkids when they saw the film ...

Cooking in California

THERE was quite a buzz in Hollywood over the party to launch Aloha Airlines' new flights from Burbank. All were wowed by the culinary magic conjured up by isle chef Alan Wong, who creates the first class meals on Aloha's trans-Pacific flights. The party was held at the Hilton Los Angeles Universal City, whose GM is Juan Aquinde, who was GM of the Waikiki Beachcomber when Wong worked there. Aquinde hired Wong's assistant at the Beachcomber, Leigh Ito, and he helped arrange the party for Aloha ...

HALIIMAILE General Store chef Beverly Gannon also is heading to California, where she'll conduct cooking classes on Hawaiian home cooking at Ramekins Sonoma Valley Culinary School ... Chef Bev spent the weekend in Napa, sharing cooking classes with her daughter, Cheech Gannon -- her Haliimaile sous chef -- and Amy Ferguson-Ota of Oodles of Noodles in Kona ...

Schmaus Haus

SERGIO'S GM Larry Schmaus considered it something of a royal weekend. The "King" of French cuisine, Michel Martin, went Italian there Saturday and Sunday. Wendy Nagaishi chose Sergio's as the birthday locale for husband David, who's managed several eateries in town such as Nick's and Don Ho's Island Grill and is now at the Shorebird. And the recently knighted Sir Dereck and Lady Maughan flew in from England and dined there with Lady Maughan's brother, Mufi Hannemann, who suddenly has a lot of time on his hands since he's no longer running for mayor ...
