Omori makes WAC
second team

Hawaii's Gregg Omori was the only Rainbow chosen yesterday to the All-Western Athletic Conference baseball team.

Omori received second team honors.

The senior first baseman from Kaneohe, batted .273 in the recently completed season. He played in 48 of the Rainbows' 55 games and had two home runs, 32 RBIs and a .998 fielding percentage.

Vincent Sanisi, a freshman for WAC champion Rice, was picked as the conference's player of the year and Fresno State's Ben Fritz was named the pitcher of the year.

Two more honors went to Rice -- Philip Humber as freshman of the year and Wayne Graham as coach of the year.

Robb eliminates Campbell in Fiji

Hawaii's Kalani Robb eliminated former world No. 2 Michael Campbell in what proved to be yesterday's most exciting clash at the Quiksilver Pro's $250,000 World Championship.

The pair caught great waves early on, before "Cambo" took the lead following a brilliant 9.4 tube ride. The local boy then used priority to regain poll position with a 7.75 score, and his Australian counterpart was unable to find the next wave he required.

"It definitely was a really good heat," acknowledged Robb. "The lead changed a couple of times. We actually almost didn't have the third round because the conditions were looking marginal, but then they started coming in and it was perfect for big barrels and big maneuvers. Mick and I both got some really good ones, so I'm stoked."

Hawaii surfer Andy Irons competes in today's third round against Shane Powell of Australia. Sunny Garcia also advanced to the third round and faces fellow local surfer Shane Dorian.
