Hawaii’s losing streak
at 7 after loss at Fresno

From staff and wire reports

FRESNO, Calif. >> Bob Runyon pitched his ninth complete game this year to lead Fresno State to a 6-2 Western Athletic Conference victory over Hawaii last night at Beiden Field.

The Rainbows equaled their longest losing streak of the season with their seventh consecutive defeat.

The teams conclude their seasons today with a game scheduled to start at 10:15 a.m. Hawaii time.

Runyon walked one and struck out one, but got 16 outs on ground balls.

The score was 1-1 through four innings, then the Bulldogs (31-27, 18-11 WAC) broke the game open with a four-run fifth, an inning that mirrors the frustration and lack of luck the Rainbows (16-39, 5-24) have experienced all season.

Joey Myers, who hit a solo home run over the center-field wall in the third inning, hit what looked like a routine fly ball toward right to start the fifth. Neither UH second baseman Lane Nogawa nor right fielder Tim Montgomery got a bead on the ball and it dropped between them for a double.

"It was too far way from Lane," Hawaii coach Mike Trapasso said. "It was a twilight ball and Tim never saw it. He had his hands up in the air and actually started back before he finally saw the ball."

UH starter Ricky Bauer then got two quick strikes on Chris Patrick, but hit him with his third pitch. Scott Beshears bunted toward third hoping to sacrifice, but the ball slowed to a crawl in the lush grass and went for an infield single to load the bases.

The next two Bulldogs, No. 3 hitter Casey McGehee and cleanup batter Ben Fritz, each tattooed Bauer's first pitch for two-run doubles to left field and suddenly FSU had a 5-1 lead that was enough for Runyon to earn his tenth victory of the season.

"Being in a bind as a freshman, Ricky sometimes has a hard time closing things out. He did get out of that inning, but by the end of the sixth he was over 90 pitches and gassed," said Trapasso.

Myers hit his third home run off UH pitching in two games with a blast over the center-field wall in the sixth, doubling his season total to six.

The Rainbows' first run came in the fourth when Brent Cook doubled down the left-field line and scored on Scooter Martines' single to center.

In the seventh inning, Derek Honma beat out a high hopper behind the pitcher's mound, moved to third on Montgomery's single to center and scored on Runyon's wild pick off throw to first base.

Senior right-hander Sean Yamashita starts for UH today.
