Man arrested for assault after reporting stolen car

Police arrested a suspect in a baseball-bat assault after he reported his car stolen by one of the men he allegedly tried to hit with the bat.

The incident began about 3:45 a.m. yesterday when two groups of men were drinking beer at Keehi Boat Harbor and got into an argument.

Police said some of the men were apparently jealous that the two victims had newer cars.

The suspects left the scene and returned with more people. At least four of the estimated eight men had baseball bats, police said. The victims fled in one of the suspect's cars as the men approached swinging bats and hitting their cars, police said.

The suspects later reported the car stolen, and a 21-year-old Kalihi man was identified by the victims and arrested on suspicion of criminal property damage and terroristic threatening.
