KCC offers summer dining

Star-Bulletin Staff

For culinary students at Kapiolani Community College, each new semester puts them on display, as they go to work in the campus dining rooms to show what they know.

For diners, this means very affordable meals in the very picturesque KCC dining rooms, with their sweeping ocean views. Yes, the chefs are in training, but their menus aim high and the instructors who ensure quality are restaurant veterans.

The new development in campus cuisine is that KCC has added two summer sessions, which means the dining rooms, normally closed from May to September, are now open for a big chunk of summer.

Classes began Monday, and with some fresh instruction under their belts, the students are ready to reopen. Service begins Thursday and runs through Aug. 6, except for a break the first week of July.

After a stint in the student cafeteria, culinary students move up to the restaurants, beginning with 220 Grille, a casual bistro, where they perfect short-order skills. Prices here run from $2 soups to a top price for entrées of $6.50.

In the Ka Ikena Dining Room, students work on regional cooking skills, with a menu that progresses through Mediterranean, French, Alpine and Latin cuisines. A four-course lunch goes for $14 to $17.

In their final semester, the students work the Tamarind Café, serving Asian and Pacific Rim cuisine served tapas style in a fine-dining setting. Individual selections are under $5, with an all-you-can-eat sushi bar priced at $11.95.

The dining rooms are open for lunch Tuesdays to Fridays. Ka Ikena is also open for dinner. Call 734-9499.
