Prep stars still playing



Some of the state's top high school girls basketball and baseball players will close the spring sports season with all-star events over the Memorial Day weekend.

The Mufi Hannemann Basketball Jamboree is set for Saturday at Iolani Gym with former University of Hawaii players joining four teams of high school standouts.

Nani Cockett and Janka Gabrielova are two of the UH alumna scheduled to participate.

Among the high school players confirmed to play are Brittney Aiwohi (Sacred Hearts), Amber Lee (McKinley), Ashley Takata (Kalani).

The event starts at 8:30 a.m. with youth league contests. The high school level games start at 11:30 and the championship is scheduled for 3:45 p.m.

The high school baseball season closes with the fourth annual Sugar Mill Classic on Memorial Day at Hans L'Orange Park in Waipahu.

The game is set for 1 p.m. Monday. Batting practice starts at 10 a.m. Rosters have yet to be finalized.

Hawaii sailors named to All-Pacific team

Senior All-American Molly O'Bryan was named to the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate Yacht Racing Association's first team yesterday, joining two teammates.

Freshman Bryan Lake made it to the coed team while sophomore Jennifer Warnock was named to the crew squad.

Hawaii will try to win three different championships in June.

Phillips named Hawaii's Most Outstanding Boxer

Carl Phillips Jr. of Wahiawa earned the Most Outstanding Boxer at the Hawaii Golden Gloves Tournament at Wahiawa over the weekend.

Phillips won at 132 pounds and will join 10 others at the National Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions in Denver, Colo., June 17-22.

Todd Park of Pearlside lost to Brent Rodrigues of Palolo but took home the sportsmanship ward. Walter Elvis Salas Jr. of Waianae's win over Shawn Murphy in the 165 pound class was judged as the outstanding bout.
