Jellyfish stings prompt Waimea Bay warnings

Eight to 10 people were stung by box jellyfish at Waimea Bay yesterday and prompted city lifeguards to post warning signs at the beach.

More than 15 jellyfish were seen.

James Howe, chief of the Ocean Safety Division, said off-cycle jellyfish at the bay are unusual but not alarming. Box jellyfish numbers peak in Hawaii seven to 10 days after a full moon.

Landy Blair, the division's water safety officer, said off-cycle jellyfish sightings usually occur once every three months. Off-cycle occurrences at Waimea are more unusual because the bay is not known for large jellyfish populations, he said.

Only in recent years, Blair said, has Waimea experienced box jellyfish influxes. The higher incidence has no identifiable cause, he said.

Many of yesterday's stings occurred in early morning, Howe said.

Blair expects the jellyfish to be out of the bay today but advised swimmers to exercise caution and be aware of broken tentacles, which he said could still sting.

The box jellyfish's sting is comparable to the Portuguese man-o-war's, Blair said. Effects can range from minor irritation to excruciating pain or a toxic reaction, he said.

Domino's fund-raiser to aid girl's heart surgery

Domino's Pizza Hawaii is holding a fund-raiser today to help Taylor Verdadero, a second-grader at Mililani Mauka Elementary School, with medical expenses.

She is scheduled to undergo open-heart surgery in June. Thirty percent of all regularly priced purchases at Domino's made on behalf of Verdadero or the Mililani school will go to defer expenses, expected to be more than $30,000. Customers must mention the fund-raiser when ordering. The two-day fund-raiser began yesterday.

Verdadero was born with a severe heart defect and underwent surgery at the age of 1 in Los Angeles. The surgery at Stanford Medical Center in California this summer is to repair an enlarged heart, Pirrone said.

>> Marcus Bender and two other silent partners established Brew Moon parent company Honolulu Brewing Co. LLC in April 2001, with Bender to serve as majority owner and member manager. TheBuzz column on Page C1 May 14 mischaracterized Bender's ownership status. Also, the eclipse menu referred to in the column is part of the overall menu.
