Yokozuna Musashimaru
grabs solo lead at 10-0


TOKYO (AP) -- Hawaiian-born yokozuna Musashimaru grabbed the solo lead at 10-0 as his rival ozeki Chiyotaikai suffered his first upset defeat Tuesday, the 10th day of the 15-day Summer Grand Sumo Tournament.

Musashimaru was followed by Chiyotaikai and No. 9 maegashira Dejima at 9-1 and No. 10 maegashira Kyokushuzan, or Batbayar Davaa of Mongolia, at 8-2.

Wrestling at the Ryogoku Kokugikan Sumo Arena in downtown Tokyo and seeking his 11th tournament victory, Musashimaru clashed hard against No. 6 maegashira Kotonowaka and pushed him out, leaving Kotonowaka at 4-6.

Ozeki Tochiazuma fought off Chiyotaikai's initial charge of hand thrusts by turning around the ring, and sent him out for his seventh victory against three defeats.

Dejima attempted to drive out No. 2 maegashira Tosanoumi and quickly pulled him down, leaving Tosanoumi at 5-5.

Sekiwaka Asashoryu, or Dolgorsvren Dagvadrj of Mongolia, quickly grabbed No. 10 maegashira Kyokushuzan's belt, charged him with an arm throw attempt and sent him out for his seventh victory against three defeats.

In other major bouts, ozeki Kaio sent out No. 3 maegashira Takanowaka from behind for his sixth victory against four defeats. Takanowaka is 3-7.

Ozeki Musoyama drove out komusubi Wakanosato after fighting off Wakanosato's pulling attempt. Musoyama is 7-3 and Wakanosato 5-5.

No. 4 maegashira Kyokutenho, or Mongolian Tsevegnyam Nyamjav, fought off No. 1 maegashira Aminishiki's twisting attempts at the ring's edge and crushed him down for his fourth victory against six defeat. Aminishiki is 3-7.
