Yokozuna Musashimaru
and ozeki Chiyotaikai
remain undefeated

TOKYO (AP) - Hawaiian-born yokozuna Musashimaru remained undefeated at 9-0 and shared a two-way lead with ozeki Chiyotaikai Monday, the ninth day of the 15-day Summer Grand Sumo Tournament.

One victory behind at 8-1 are No. 9 maegashira Dejima and No. 10 maegashira Kyokushuzan, or Batbayar Davaa of Mongolia.

Three ozekis - Kaio, Musoyama and Tochiazuma - suffered upset defeats Monday.

In the day's final bout at Tokyo's Ryogoku Kokugikan in downtown Tokyo, Musashimaru, or Fiamalu Penitani, grabbed No. 5 maegashira Akinoshima's belt and forced him out, leaving Akinoshima at 3-6.

Chiyotaikai charged No. 4 maegashira Kyokutenho with a series of hand thrusts against his foe's throat, grabbed his foe's belt and drove him out, handing Kyokutenho of Mongolia, or Tsevegnyam Nyamjav, his sixth defeat against three victories.

Dejima fought off No. 15 maegashira Asanowaka's initial charge of hand thrusts and bulldozed him out, leaving Asanowaka at 4-5.

No. 2 maegashira Tosanoumi held on despite Kyokushuzan's pushing and pulling attempts and sent him out for his fifth victory against four defeats.

In other major bouts, sekiwake Asashoryu, or Dolgorsvren Dagvadrj of Mongolia, picked up his sixth victory against three defeats when ozeki Musoyama, attempting to crush down Asashoryu, stepped out of the ring before Asashoryu hit the dirt, giving Asashoryu the victory. Musoyama is also 6-3.

No. 1 maegashira Wakanosato held off Kaio's arm throw attempt and shoved him out, leaving both wrestlers at 5-4.

No. 3 maegashira Takanowaka charged Tochiazuma with an arm throw attempt and sent him out for his third victory against six defeats. Tochiazuma is 6-3.
