Vacant lots near memorial
may be leased to developer

Question: Recently, my tourist friend and I visited the Arizona Memorial. To put it mildly, I was shocked at the shabby condition of two vacant areas near the USS Bowfin Submarine Museum and Park that are used for the parking of cars. Millions of people visit the Arizona Memorial. The U.S. Navy and the people of Hawaii should take pride in the face we show to the world. These areas could be paved and landscaped. In this day and age when a missile costs millions of dollars, what would it cost to tidy up these areas?

Answer: Because the lots may be developed as part of a visitor information center for Ford Island, the Navy has no plans to pave or landscape the area.

The Navy-owned lots once housed a warehouse that was demolished years ago, according to Agnes Tauyan, spokeswoman for Navy Region Hawaii.

The lots currently provide overflow parking for visitors to the Arizona, Bowfin and USS Missouri Memorial. There are no plans to pave the gravel lots because the property is expected to be offered for lease in conjunction with development of Ford Island, Tauyan said. A developer might choose to use the property for a visitor information center parking area, she said.

Proceeds from such sales or leases will be used to develop and maintain Navy facilities at Ford Island.

Current plans include consolidating selected operations on the island, as well as limited private development of Ford Island.

Q: On Monday, May 6, I stopped by Compadres in Ward Centre and ordered a pitcher of margaritas. It was their "Monday Margarita Madness" with $10 pitchers all day until closing. I ordered nachos and one bottle of beer. The total bill amounted to $34.37, with the cost for the margarita originally priced at $24.50 crossed out to reflect $10 and subtracting $14.50 from the total. I paid the bill and left. The next day I checked the receipt and noticed that the tax I paid was for the total of $34.37 instead of the adjusted price of $19.50, resulting in an overpayment of 62 cents. Although it doesn't seem like much, the amount of pitchers sold during the whole day could amount to a substantial sum. Does this sound right?

A: Compadres said an error was made in calculating the tax.

"It seems our employee made the error when entering a discounted item in the computer," said spokeswoman Elissa Josephsohn. The mistake in calculating the tax on the original price was not picked up by the computer when the special prices was entered manually, she said.

If you will contact her, "we will happily send a certificate and apologies," she said.

Compadres has cautioned employees to be extra careful, Josephsohn said, noting that "we have not had any other problems brought to our attention by customers or our accounting" and that the restaurant tries "our best, as we have for over 18 years, to be the best in value, service and food."

To the parents who allow their kids, while they're watching, to jump up and down on our canoes based at Keehi Lagoon. The last few Sundays, they've damaged the canoes and the trailers of the clubs that are down there and generally raised havoc. The canoes are very expensive. We have called police and will be sending letters. -- Reggie
