Now that state health officials have announced an end to the dengue fever epidemic, the National Cemetery of the Pacific will revert to its traditional system of disposing of flowers only when they become unsightly, wilted or faded.

Throughout the epidemic, Director Gene E. Castagnetti said the cemetery was disposing of all flowers every Wednesday.

"We would like to take this opportunity to thank the veterans, their families and friends for their understanding and cooperation in handling the situation as we attempted to do our part in eradicating this mosquito-borne virus."

Search proceeds after Kauai man's power boat found

The Coast Guard was expected to continue searching today for a 47-year-old Kauai man whose power boat was found drifting 70 miles south of Oahu about 2:47 yesterday afternoon.

Mark Brewer left Nawiliwili, Kauai, about 1 p.m. Friday and was scheduled to arrive at Ko Olina about 8 p.m. that night.

Coast Guard Chief Petty Officer Lauren Smith said it is believed Brewer may have fallen or was knocked overboard by high seas.

Smith said Brewer's son called the Honolulu Fire Department on Saturday to report his father missing. HFD notified the Coast Guard.

A crew aboard a C-130 search plane spotted the 22-foot power boat, but there was no sign of Brewer. Smith said Brewer did not have a radio aboard the vessel.
