Smith scores for Wahine
at WAC Championships

Cheryl Smith won an individual title at the WAC championships at Houston yesterday, but her team still finished well behind the field in last.

Smith scored 18 of Hawaii's 49 points in the meet, running the 10,000 meters in 36 minutes, 25.92 seconds to beat Tulsa's Charlotte Sanderson by 15 seconds. Smith was second best in the 5,000 meters, running a 17:13.82 to finish 11 seconds behind SMU freshman Karin VanRooyen.

Casey McGuire-Turcotte, took second in the 1500 meters, while Olivia Smoody tied for first in the high jump.

Fresno State won the meet with 129 points.

Aiea's Ito leads USGA Public links qualifiers

Aiea's Merryn Ito shot even par 74 to take medalist honors and qualify for USGA women's public links championship in June at Bend, Ore.

Ito beat all comers in the qualifier at the Grove Farm Golf Course at Puakea in Lihue yesterday, one shot better than Kayla Morinaga of Honolulu, who also qualified. Whiteny Ueno of Hilo and Lisa Kajihara of Maui joined them on the list of qualifiers, while Shelcie Takenouchi, Kimberly Kim, Miki Ueoka and Sharron Weber were the alternates.

Carter coming back for UH basketball camp

Former Hawaii honorable mention all-American Anthony Carter, a point guard for the Miami Heat, will be part of the Rainbow Men's Basketball Summer Camps next month at the UH athletic complex.

The camps are open to boys and girls, ages 5-17, and will be held June 8-10 and June 11-13 from 9 a.m.-4 p.m.

The fee is $150 per session and includes a basketball and T-shirt. The staff includes head coach Riley Wallace and assistants, and current and former players.

Celebrate sailing championship at QB Club

UH sailing coach Andrew Johnson will appear at the Honolulu Quarterback Club tomorrow, taking questions and showing a video of his team's recent championship.

Wahine volleyball coach Dave Shoji, Arizona football player Joe Siofele and the producers of the Hawaii Boat Show and Ocean Expo will also speak.

Lunch begins at 11:30 a.m. at the Pagoda Restaurant in Honolulu; the program begins promptly at noon.

Brigham Young-Hawaii's No. 2 beats No. 1 for title

Tomoko Sukegawa and Amy Sun came back to beat Petra Gaspar and Tagifano Taosoga 4-6, 6-0, 6-4 in the finals of Women's Night Doubles at the Kailua Raquet Club last night.

It is the first title for the pair, who are the No. 2 team for NCAA Div. II national champion BYUH. Gaspar and Taosoga are the Seasiders' No. 1 team and entered the tournament as the top seed.

Hawaii Pacific's Lani Matsunaga and Fleurette Miranti beat Heidi and Kimi Kaloi 8-6 for third place.

Honolulu Polo Club to take on Kentucky

The Aloha Blue Grass Derby Cup Tournament, featuring players from the Louisville (Ky.) Polo Club, is scheduled for today at the Honolulu Polo Club field in Waimanalo.

Gates open at 1 p.m. followed by the match at 2:30 p.m. General admission is $3 with children under 12 admitted free.

Hawaii Kai Track Club ready to practice Tuesday

The Hawaii Kai Track Club will hold its first practice and sign up participants Tuesday from 4:45 to 6:15 p.m. at the Kaiser High School track.

Practice sessions continue every Tuesday and Thursday at the same time.
