Kingston Trio comes home
to the Buff ’n’ Blue

FLASHBACK: When superstar Bill Cosby first played the "Hungry i" in San Francisco about 40 years ago, he was the opening act for what hot, hot group? If you said the Kingston Trio, step to the head of the class. The Trio ultimately became the No. 1 vocal group in the world until unseated by the Beatles. Why bring them up now? The group will be appearing at Punahou School as part of the Punahou Class of 1952 reunion. Both Bob Shane and Dave Guard were '52 Punahou grads, and Shane still holds up the trio which now includes Bob Haworth and George Grove -- no relation to Granny Goose. The trio will be performing at Dillingham Hall on the Punahou campus June 4 to 6 and reservations can be made by calling 943-3683. It'll be a nostalgic homecoming for Shane, since it was on the very same Dillingham stage that he and Guard performed together as part of a western review that was part of Punahou's annual "Variety Show." I can't wait to see if they still wear short-sleeved striped shirts ...

THE City's May ethnic festival honoring Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam takes place tonight at Honolulu Hale. It's free including parking at the Civic Center. The evening celebrates the traditional music and dance, art and handicrafts, ethnic food and fashions from the countries. Designer Mai Scherelle coordinated the Vietnamese fashion show from traditional to modern ... Some UH students are preparing to take some time off, but about 50 of them are heading for China to perform the traditional Beijing Opera, "Judge Bao and the Case of Qin Xiangian" in English. They did the show here after months of rehearsal and it was very impressive. It'll be interesting to see how it's accepted in Beijing ...

Full Marks

YOU should have no reservations about taking in the hilarious one-man comedy, "Fully Committed" at the Arts at Mark's Garage downtown. Andrew Meader occupied the stage full time, largely talking to people trying to make dinner reservations at the hot restaurant where he works. He also chats via intercom to the dining room upstairs and on a separate phone to the angry chef. He was, quite simply, brilliant in playing both ends of those conversations in a variety of accents. The interplay between Cathie Anderson's lighting design (run by Alanna Daley) and Jason Taglianetti's sound cues - nearly incessant - matched Meader's demeanor perfectly. On certain evenings, Meader will be spelled in the solo role by Greg Howell, who's played multiple roles before but never this many ...

Good? You bet

THE name Art Ginsburg may not sound familiar, but if you're a TV watcher you should recall the phrase, "Oh, it's soooo goood." Yes, he goes by the name Mr. Food on television, whipping up dishes he loves. And when Art dined at Donatoni's Restaurant at the Hilton Waikoloa Village, you can bet the phrase "soooo goood" came up as well ... Compadres waiter Cliff Sunajo is a movie buff, so when he saw a familiar face dining there this week he ran to tell manager Tom Comog. It was young actor Paul Walker, who's appeared in such films as "She's All That," "Varsity Blues" and "Pleasantville" with Reese Witherspoon and Tobey Maguire ...
