Musashimaru remains
tied for lead at
summer sumo tourney

TOKYO (AP) - Yokozuna Musashimaru remained undefeated Wednesday with a solid win over Takanowaka on the fourth day of the Summer Grand Sumo Tournament.

Fighting in the final bout at Ryogoku Kokugikan, Musashimaru used a series of arm thrusts to knock Takanowaka off balance and then finished off the No. 3 maegashira with a body check to the chest.

At 4-0, Musashimaru is tied for the lead of the 15-day tournament along with ozeki Chiyotaikai and Mongolian grappler Kyokushuzan.

Chiyotaikai came charging out of the face-off with several punishing blows to the throat of Toki and quickly dispatched the towering top maegashira for his fourth win. Toki dropped to 1-3.

In the day's only major upset, ozeki Tochiazuma suffered his first loss at the hands of No. 2 maegashira Tosanoumi. Tosanoumi took control at the outset and simply overwhelmed Tochiazuma with his superior size. Both wrestlers stand at 3-1.

Sekiwake Asashoryu, or Mongolian Dolgorsvren Dagvadrj, bounced back from Tuesday's loss to Tosanoumi with an impressive win over veteran Takanonami, a No. 2 maegashira.

Asashoryu, bidding for promotion to ozeki, got both arms on the sash of Takanonami after the face-off and lifted the winless former ozeki out over the straw ridge to improve to 3-1.

Ozeki Kaio bounced back from two straight defeats, shoving fourth-ranked maegashira Daizen out with several powerful shoves to the throat. Both wrestlers stand at 2-2.

Ozeki Musoyama had an easy time forcing out Tochinonada to pick up his third win. Komusubi Tochinonada is 2-2.

In an earlier bout, Kyokushuzan, or Mongolian Batbayer Davaa, continued to impress with a solid win over No. 9 maegashira Dejima. Kyokushuzan, a No. 10 maegashira, outmaneuvered Dejima and forced him over the edge to improve to 4-0. Dejima dropped to 3-1.
