HPU recipe book also cooks up zany facts

Students of Hawaii Pacific University have put out a cookbook that's not just recipes, it also provides some oddball food knowledge, to wit:

>> Beetles taste like apples, wasps like pine nuts, white worms like pork rinds.

>> 7-Up got its name from the size of the original bottles (7 ounces) and the direction of the bubbles (up).

>> The sound of E.T. walking in the movie was made by someone squishing her hands in jelly.

All this, plus recipes from around the world are contained in "A World of Flavor," a modest, paper-bound publication put out by Students in Free Enterprise.

The recipes are from students, faculty, staff, friends in the community and a few local chefs. They come from 30 countries, reflecting the diverse makeup of the college.

Included are recipes for Austrian paprikaschnitzel, Botswanan corn soup, Mexican churros, Korean bulgogi and more.

The book costs $6.50 and is available at the HPU bookstore, online at hpu.edu/bookstore or via e-mail from project chairwoman Laura Windell, aural144@hotmail.com. A portion of the proceeds will benefit a student-sponsored dinner at a homeless shelter.

Cookbooks compete

Speaking of homegrown cookbooks, Tabasco, the hot-sauce maker, is sponsoring its 13th Community Cookbook Awards.

Cookbooks produced by non-profit organizations in 2001 and 2002 may compete for regional awards of up to $1,000. Those that have sold more than 100,000 copies, no matter when they were published, may be submitted for the Walter S. McIlhenny Hall of Fame, for books considered classics.

Cookbooks are judged on design, title, theme and other considerations beyond the recipes themselves.

Deadline to enter is Oct. 1. For entry requirements and forms send a self-addressed, stamped envelope to Tabasco Community Cookbook Awards, care of McIlhenny Co., Attention Sheryl Dartez, General Delivery, Avery Island, La. 70513.
