The following is a preview of movies opening this week

THURSDAY

"Star Wars: Episode II -- Attack of the Clones": It's a decade after the events of "Episode I -- The Phantom Menace," and Jedi teacher Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor), his accomplished apprentice Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen) and once-queen-now-senator Padmé Amidala (Natalie Portman) are thrown together again since the Trade Federation invasion of Naboo. The two Jedi are assigned to protect Amidala, whose life is threatened by a faction of political separatists. The origins of Skywalker's evolution into the evil Darth Vader start here, with Anakin and Amidala's romance, Anakin's mother and the machinations of Supreme Chancellor Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid) and bounty hunter Jango Fett (Temuera Morrison) (PG).

FRIDAY

"About a Boy": Based on Nick Hornby's bestseller, Hugh Grant plays a trust-fund slacker who, while trying to pick up single moms at single parent meetings, befriends a 12-year-old (Nicholas Hoult). Directed by Chris and Paul Weitz of "American Pie" fame (PG-13).

"The Salton Sea": Twisty thriller in which an undercover agent (Val Kilmer) immerses himself in the seamy underworld of crystal meth addicts. Co-stars Peter Sarsgaard, Deborah Kara Unger and Vincent D'Onofrio (R).
