BYUH’s national title
hunt takes Sunday off

The NCAA allows postponement
of title matches for religion

Today's the day for the Brigham Young-Hawaii tennis teams.

Their final tests in quests for national championships were originally scheduled for yesterday. But the NCAA Division II men's and women's title matches at Kansas City, Mo., were postponed a day because Sunday is a day of rest for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

"It's written in our mission statement that allows the teams to stay away from competing on the sabbath day," BYUH men's and women's coach Dave Porter said. "Our libraries are not open, there's no classes, and the school is basically shut down except for church-related activities. And the NCAA respects our mission statement."

The women's final against Armstrong Atlantic State and the men's final vs. Drury will be played this morning.

"We're excited to be in a position where we have a chance to win," Porter said. "We'll give it a run and hope when the dust settles, it will be in our favor."

Porter, who has led the women to four national championships and the men to two national runner-up finishes, said winning a first men's title would "be a huge highlight for me."
