Cable failure knocks out power in Kahaluu, Kona

Approximately 4,050 customers in the Kahaluu, Kona, area lost power for more than an hour on Saturday when an underground cable failed, the Hawaii Electric Light Co. said yesterday.

The power outage began at 5:37 p.m. HELCO crews isolated the problem by performing switching operations, and managed to restore power to approximately 3,000 customers by 6:45 p.m. Most other customers had power back by 7:19 p.m., but 20 customers along Kaleiopapa Road had no power until 7:57 p.m.

Molokai tourism group gets a worldwide reach

The Molokai Visitors Association has joined the state visitors bureau, bringing all state-funded tourism marketing groups for Hawaii under the Hawaii Visitors & Convention Bureau's promotional umbrella, officials said recently.

The Molokai visitors group joined the state visitors bureau's Maui chapter.

Although the Molokai group will continue to set the direction for tourism on the Friendly Isle, it will now be able to use the state bureau's resources to promote the island around the world.

"Molokai's visitor industry will enjoy the value of HVCB's worldwide promotional resources and the integration of the Friendly Isle's beauty and diversity into our global marketing efforts," said Tony Vericella, president and chief executive officer of the state visitors bureau.

Under the arrangement, employees of the Molokai visitors bureau will also qualify for benefits such as health insurance and retirement savings plans.

HPU's student paper garners national awards

Kalamalama, the Hawaii Pacific University student newspaper, won three national awards from the American Scholastic Press Association, placing HPU overall among the top seven college newspapers in the nation.

For the third year in a row, Kalamalama received the national award for Best Community Service, for its coverage of the Sept. 11 attacks, which included a series of articles, an eyewitness account from an HPU alumnus living in New York and a front-page photo collage honoring heroes.

The association also awarded Kalamalama the Best Photography award and recognized students Rick Bernico and Agge Sjobom for outstanding photography throughout the year.

In addition, for the fifth year running, Kalamalama received the national First Place with Special Merit award in the top division, which consists of colleges and universities with more than 2,500 students. The newspaper scored 965 out of 1,000 in content coverage, page design, art, editing and creativity.

Car crash on Farrington kills man, injures woman

A 21-year-old Nanakuli man died yesterday after his car overturned and landed upside down in a concrete drainage ditch along Farrington Highway.

Police said Christopher Paulo was driving his 1995 Ford Mustang east through Ulehawa Beach Park about 5:49 a.m. when the car struck several large boulders, went airborne and landed on its roof, trapping Paulo under the vehicle, police said.

Paulo died while still in the car. Firefighters had to cut open the vehicle to remove his body. Police said a passenger in the car, a 22-year-old Nanakuli woman, was sent to the hospital in good condition with minor injuries.

Police said speed was a factor in the accident and Paulo and the woman may have been arguing at the time.

NEIGHBOR ISLANDS

Kona man hospitalized after fall from Puna cliff

HILO >> A 20-year-old Kona man was reported in guarded condition at Hilo Medical Center after being injured in a fall from a 20-foot cliff in Puna.

A Hawaii County Fire Department rescue team was called around 3 a.m. yesterday to the scene at the end of Pilikai Road at Kaloli Point in Hawaiian Paradise Park.

Fire officials said the man was camping in the area when he fell and struck his head on the rocky shoreline. Other campers carried the unconscious man up the cliff and were met by Fire Department paramedics who took him to a waiting ambulance. The victim was unable to be airlifted out of the area because of poor weather.

HPD plays role in alleged Las Vegas assault case

Honolulu police assisted Las Vegas police yesterday when the victim of an assault in a Las Vegas hotel room reported the incident at Queen's Medical Center.

While being treated for a fractured bone in her lower back, a 19-year-old woman reported that her 47-year-old father had assaulted her Saturday night in Las Vegas, police said. Both are Honolulu residents.

The Honolulu officers faxed the Las Vegas Police Department a copy of their initial report and closed the case, which can be reopened if the Las Vegas prosecutor's office relinquishes jurisdiction to Honolulu, police said.

Police seek suspect in Kalihi store robbery

Police are looking for a man who robbed an electronics store in Kalihi Saturday night.

Police said the suspect walked into Radio Shack at 1620 N. School St. at about 8:45 p.m. and allegedly threatened a sales clerk with a handgun.

Police said there were no injuries and the suspect fled on foot. Items taken are pending inventory, police said.

The suspect is described as having a thin build and dark complexion. He was wearing a maroon hooded jacket and dark-colored pants at the time of the robbery, police said.

WINDWARD OAHU

Police seek information in Heeia park beating

Police were seeking information about an incident at Heeia State Park yesterday morning that left a man in critical condition. The man was found unconscious about 6 a.m., police said. He appeared to be the victim of a beating, with injuries to his face and head.

He was transferred to Queen's Medical Center.

EAST OAHU

Teenage girl charged with forgery in Kahala

Police charged a 16-year-old girl with forgery after she allegedly tried to use a $100 gift certificate at the Cinnabon at Kahala Mall at about 10 p.m. on Saturday.

The counter employee checked the gift certificate, determined that it was a forgery and called police.

WAIKIKI

Child found in Jacuzzi is now stable at hospital

A 2-year-old boy was listed in stable condition at Kapiolani Medical Center after he was found in a Jacuzzi at a Waikiki hotel yesterday afternoon.

About 3:35 p.m., the child's 6-year-old brother pulled him out of the water at the Royal Garden at Waikiki on Olohana Street., said Capt. Kenison Tejada of the Honolulu Fire Department. It is not known whether the child fell into the Jacuzzi, Tejada said.

A doctor from Canada performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation on the child. A pulse was detected, and the child later began to cry, Tejada said. Paramedics transported the 2-year-old boy to Kapiolani.

CENTRAL OAHU

Soldier, 22, is accused of kicking wife in face

A 22-year-old Schofield Barracks soldier was arrested this morning after he allegedly kicked his wife in the face after catching her kissing another man. He was being held for investigation of second-degree assault.

Police said the couple was at a party at a friend's apartment in Waialua about 4:45 a.m. when the attack occurred. The wife sustained fractures to her nose and the bones around her right eye.

NORTH SHORE

HPD arrests teenager in Sunset Beach burglary

Honolulu police arrested a teenage boy after a man caught the suspect in his Sunset Beach home early Friday morning.

Police said the victim saw the suspect in his home at 4 a.m. and chased him out of the house. Police later located the suspect nearby on Hoalua Street and arrested him for burglary.

WEST OAHU

Ewa Beach traffic fight leads to couple's arrests

A 37-year-old man and 31-year-old woman were arrested for reckless endangering this morning following a traffic confrontation in Ewa Beach last night.

The couple was in a white pickup truck being chased by a black pickup truck about 10 p.m. on Fort Weaver Road, a witness told police. The two vehicles stopped near the Makule Road intersection after the black truck cut off the white truck, the witness reported. The black truck then fled after an occupant of the white truck fired a handgun through the window of the vehicle, the witness reported.

Patrol officers located the white truck and arrested the suspects just after midnight. Police were searching for the black truck and awaiting a search warrant to look for the handgun in the white truck.
