Gaspar is national
player of year


Brigham Young-Hawaii women's tennis player Petra Gaspar was named NCAA II National Senior Player of the Year yesterday by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.

Jan Krejci, a member of the Seasiders men's team, was named NCAA II National Rookie of the Year.

Gaspar and Krejci were also given the same honors for the West Region, while freshman Adrienn Hegedus was named women's West Region Rookie of the Year, while coach Dave Porter received two coach of the year honors for BYUH's men's and women's programs.

Gaspar has led the women's team to a 128-1 record in her four years.

Irons, Garcia surf into third round in Tahiti

Hawaii surfer Andy Irons won his first-round heat yesterday to advance all the way to the third round of the Billabong Pro Teahupoo in Tahiti.

Irons beat Tahiti's Vetea David and Australia's David Webster.

Hawaii's Sunny Garcia and Conan Hayes had a tougher road into the third round. Neither won their first-round heats, but both were victorious in the second round. Garcia topped Australia's Darren O'Rafferty, while Hayes got past Danny Wills.

Hilo's Okamura 25th in regional

Hawaii-Hilo golfer Garrett Okamura finished in 25th place in the NCAA Division IIWest Regional in Goodyear, Ariz.

Okamura shot a 7-over-par 223 for the three-day tourney, while the Vulcans' Nick Mason tied for 33rd with an 11-over 227.

UC Davis won the team title and Cal State Stanislaus' Mark Lawless was the medalist with a 5-under 211.

Williams, Atay sign with UH soccer team

Kamehameha's Seline Williams and Baldwin's Mahie Atay, the Star-Bulletin's reigning state player of the year, signed with the Hawaii women's soccer team yesterday.

Williams is a defender from Mililani, while Atay is a goalkeeper from Kahului, Maui.

"Seline has terrific comfort on her ball, is a proficient passer and possesses very, very good one-on-one dribbling skills,"said Rainbow Wahine coach Pinsoom Tenzing.

"Mahie is a tremendously talented keeper. She has terrific range, soft hands and a towering drop kick."

Miano to hold camp for speed and quickness

The Rich Miano Speed and Quickness Camp is May 18 and 19 at St. Louis School.

Miano, the former NFL defensive back and an assistant football coach at Hawaii, leads instruction along with UH strength coach Mel deLaura and former Kamehameha track and field coach Marshall Marumoto.

There are two groups: ages 9-12 (8:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. both days) and 13 and over (1:45 p.m. to 5:15 p.m.). The fee is $25.

Ele Makuakane captures national title

Ele Makuakane, a senior men's tennis team from Hawaii, won the 2002 3.5 doubles championship in Palm Desert, Calif.

Team members include Larry Mun, Stan Chi, Stan Chin, Owen Chock, Lester Eng, Bill Francis, Ray Lowe, Harvey Sue and Pat Thompson.
