Navarro brings
perfect record into
fight at Blaisdell


Brian Viloria is the main attraction on a six-fight card at the Blaisdell Arean on May 17.

But its Viloria's Olympic teammate, Jose Navarro, who has won more professional fights.

The junior bantamweightwill put his 10-0 mark on the line against Honduran Julio Cesar Oyuela (7-4-2) in a scheduled eight-round bout.

Viloria (6-0, 4 KO's) squares off against Sandro Oviedo (22-17-2, 4 KO's) in the flyweight division.

Reserved tickets, priced at $25, $50, and$75, are available at the Blaisdell Box Office and all Ticket Plus locations including Foodland stores. To charge by phone,call 808-526-4400.

Special$15 reserved tickets are available to students, militarypersonneland senior citizens.

All bouts are subject to approval by the Hawaii State Boxing Commission.

Hawaiian surfers cruise in Tahitian trials

Bruce Irons capped the opening day of the VZ Hinano Trials in Teahupoo, Tahiti, with a near-perfect 9.3 ride and Hawaiian surfers won nine of the 16 heats.

Bruce Irons is the defending champion. His brother, Andy, also advanced. Oahu's Tamayo Perry squeaked past Tahiti's Kevin Johnson, 22.9-22.7.

The trials winner will receive a wildcard into the Billabong Pro, an ASP World Championship Tour event. The top Tahitian finisher also receives a wildcard.

Vulcans sports banquet set for Wednesday

The Hawaii-Hilo Vulcan All-SportsBanqet is Wednesday at the Orchid Village in the Waiakea Villas Complex. The reception begins at 5:30 p.m. with dinner to follow.
