ILH to be run by 4 ADs
for the rest of the season

A group of four athletic directors will operate the Interscholastic League of Honolulu for the remainder of the school year.

Clay Benham, the league's executive secretary for the last 32 years, died Monday afternoon after being stricken with a brain abscess last Friday.

Kamehameha principal and ILH president Tony Ramos said the everyday operation of the league will be handled on an interim basis by Blane Gaison of Kamehameha, Jim Bukes of University High, Don Botelho of Mid-Pacific and John Hom of Pac-Five.

The athletic directors agreed to the plan at their monthly meeting Monday night.

"They'll be working with the other ADs and sport coordinators and with the executive secretaries of the other leagues with the state tournaments coming up," Ramos said. "But everybody's pretty down about this."

League officials will discuss plans for Benham's permanent successor after the season.

Traveling Wahine split another doubleheader

EUGENE, ORE. >> It was a good day, bad day for Hawaii softball pitcher Shannon Tabion as she picked up a save and a loss yesterday against Oregon at Howe Field.

The Wahine (33-23)split the nonconference doubleheader with the Ducks, holding on for a 5-4 win and unable to hold on in the second game, 5-4.

Hawaii led 5-0 going into the bottom of the seventh of the opener. The Ducks (23-25) closed to 5-4 before Tabion, the third Wahine pitcher, got Janell Bergstrom to fly out to center to end the game.

In the nightcap, Hawaii led 4-0 after two innings, highlighted by Stacey Porter's 15th home run, a three-run shot in the first. But Oregon rallied to tie it with two runs in the bottom of the sixth, helped by one of the Wahine's five errors.

Bergstrom singled in Andrea Vidlund with two outs in the bottom of the seventh with the game-winner.
