CB Bancshares to pay stock and cash dividend

CB Bancshares Inc. will pay a 10 percent stock dividend as well as its regular second-quarter cash dividend of 11 cents a share, the company said yesterday. It is the same as the dividend package shareholders of the Hawaii company, parent of 21-branch City Bank, received a year ago. In between, the company has been paying 11 cents cash a share each quarter.

The new dividend will be paid June 27 to stockholders of record June 14, CB Bancshares said.

Kauai gets charged up about organic energy

No, it's not another fair for foodies, although eating would fit a strict interpretation of the topic.

The Hawaii Bioenergy Conference takes place May 16 and 17 at the Holiday Inn Sunspree Resort on Kauai.

The conference, hosted by Garden Island Resource Conservation and Development Inc., will focus on the use of energy derived from organic matter.

Speakers will include officials from the U.S. departments of Energy and Agriculture, and state government, as well as local businesspeople. They will discuss federal programs, bio-diesel production in Hawaii, cogeneration in the sugar industry and photovoltaic case studies. Topics will include tax incentives, funding opportunities and technical assistance.

"It is our goal to establish ongoing local working groups that will team up after the conference to facilitate the development of bioenergy projects," said Sabra Kauka, president of the board at Garden Island Resource.

PRSA Hawaii needs nominees for Koa Anvils

PRSA Hawaii's annual Koa Anvil Awards program has gone virtual. This year's nominations for the public relations society's awards are being taken only online at www.prsahawaii.org. Guidelines and nomination forms are available on the site. The deadline is 5 p.m. May 31.

The IRS wants your advice -- really

The Internal Revenue Service is seeking members for the Taxpayer Advocacy Panel, formerly known as the Citizen Advocacy Panel. The panel allows citizens to make suggestions regarding IRS policy, performance and decision making. While the Citizen Advocacy Panel was based in four regions with members from 10 states, the Taxpayer Advocacy Panel will have members from all 50 states.

Panel members listen to citizens and make recommendations on customer-service matters, identify and prioritize taxpayer issues, and make an annual report to the Treasury and the National Taxpayer Advocate.

Panel members must be U.S. citizens and be able to commit about 300 hours during the year to the endeavor. Applicants also must be current with their tax obligations and pass a background check.
