Iolani prepares for prom

regular season kings

Kelly Teramoto's 13th inning single and a throwing error on the play allowed Jay Marcouiller to score the winning run and give Iolani a 9-6 win over regular season champion Kamehameha in the ILH tournament yesterday. The victory kept the Raiders' hopes for a state tournament berth alive and also saved the prom.

The winner's bracket game was rescheduled as the first game of the day because of a schedule conflict with both schools' proms. The marathon game almost threatened the social function anyway, as it took four hours and fifteen minutes to decide the contest.

While some mothers were jokingly making plans to bring the tuxedos to the field, Iolani's coach was also wondering if the game would truly ever end. "I was telling (Kamehameha first baseman) J.P. Kennedy if this goes on, maybe we need to make a deal here," said coach Dean Yonamine.

Although the final score gives little indication, the game started as a pitching duel with both starters working into the eighth inning. "Shannon (Kahale) pitched great for us and Rich Olsen was fantastic for them too," said Warriors coach Vern Ramie. "We were fortunate early on to capitalize on their mistakes but later we just couldn't get the big hit."

Kamehameha came into the contest with a nine-game winning streak and it took all Iolani could muster to put an end to it.

Kala Kaaihue, in only his second game behind the plate after breaking an ankle in the preseason, collected five hits. Dustin Goto shut down the Warriors attack with stellar relief pitching to get the win and Kala's brother Kila, normally the Raiders' closer, pitched four strong innings in relief of Olsen.

After a leadoff double by Nick Freitas in the eleventh, with Kamehameha threatening to put the game to bed, Kila Kaaihue induced a pop-up to center. After an intentional walk and an unintentional walk to load the bases, Kaaihue struck out the next two batters looking.

Iolani took the lead and let Kamehameha come back in extra innings twice before finally putting the Warriors away in the thirteenth. After Marcouiller drew a leadoff walk, Teramoto singled. The throw went awry, scoring Marcouiller. After the next two batters drew walks, Bert Mitsunaga capped the scoring with a two-run ground-rule double to left field.

"We're healthy now and since the second half of the season, we've got a new attitude," said Yonamine.

"Now the kids are showing what we're all about."
