Isle-bound soldier found with knife in carry-on

SHREVEPORT, La. >> Security officers cleared the terminal at Shreveport Regional Airport and re-checked all passengers after a random search turned up a serrated knife in a Hawaii-bound soldier's carry-on bag.

The FBI investigated, and did not bring any charges against the soldier, First Assistant U.S. Attorney Bill Flanagan said.

The knife had a 5-inch blade, airport security head Harold Carpenter said.

He said security officers checked the American Eagle plane before anyone was allowed on, in addition to evacuating the terminal and re-screening all passengers.

The soldier was on his way from Fort Polk to a new post in Hawaii, Flanagan said. He was not identified.

Hilo police tournament set for May 17-19

HILO >> Hawaii County police are planning the 12th Annual Hawaii Police Commemorative Fund Tournament May 17-19 at various locations in the Hilo area, they announced.

Events include a softball tournament named in honor of officer Manuel Cadinha, killed while arresting a combative man in 1918, they said.

One mainstay of the tournament, a 5K run and a 1.5-mile walk, will not be held this year because of a conflict with the Big Island Marathon.

The run and walk are named for officer Ronald "Shige" Jitchaku, who was killed while attempting to break up a brawl in Hilo in 1990.

For further information on volleyball, basketball, golf, and other events, call Detective Greg Esteban at 808-961-2384.

Makaha house fire leaves 2 women homeless

A fire at a Makaha home last night left two women homeless and caused $105,000 damage to the wooden house and its contents.

Fire department spokesman Capt. Kenison Tejada said the two women -- one in her 30s and the other in her 50s -- were outside in the yard when the fire broke out just before 6:30 p.m.

The fire was reported under control within three minutes after firefighters arrived, but the blaze still destroyed about half of the house.

The women were not injured, but Tejada said a Chihuahua named "Pebbles" is missing. Another dog, a pit bull, ran outside the home and got into a fight with a neighbor's dog and then ran into a fire truck and had to be removed by the owner, Tejada said.

The women rented the home and there was no electricity, Tejada said. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Police arrest 20 in Kalihi in connection with drugs

Twenty men and women were arrested during a late-night police raid on a Kalihi home, where a man was beaten to death in November.

The various arrests at 686 Bannister St. were in connection with drugs, drug paraphernalia, gambling and criminal contempt of court.

The arrests were made between 10 p.m. Friday and 12:35 a.m. Saturday.

Charges were brought against six of those arrested by 6:30 p.m. yesterday but it appeared the charges dealt with outstanding warrants, police said.

On Nov. 16, two men attending a cockfight at the home were beaten by a group of men over an alleged fixed cockfight.

Leon Fernandez, 39, died of his injuries. Eufracio Esmeralda, 41, was beaten but survived.

An Oahu grand jury indicted five men for second-degree murder in Fernandez' death.
