Free to Die For their Country -- The Story of the Japanese-American Draft Resisters in World War II by Eric L. Muller

(University of Chicago Press, $27.50) The story of how Japanese-Americans were rounded up wholesale into internment camps and still managed to create what may be the most-decorated unit in US Army history is part of the national ethos. Not so well-known are the Japanese-Americans who bucked both governmental and peer pressure to defy the draft. The legal circus surrounding the "No-No Boys" -- so-called because of their answers to a pro forma loyalty oath -- is examined here by law professor Muller in exacting and heartbreaking detail.

Pearl Survivors Eyewitness Accounts by Dick Jensen

(First Foundations, $5.99) This is likely to become a collector's item among Pearl Harbor scholars simply because it's hard to get -- it's sold mostly in South Carolina grocery stores. Author Jensen (no, not the entertainer) is a "practitioner of journalism" who conducted brief, and not-too-revealing, interviews with more than a dozen survivors. Such first-person accounts are always useful.
