1971: Hayashis got new hotel
and newborn son same day

MAY 1 has always been a special day in the H.T. Hayashi family. Seven years ago on May 1, the Hayashis opened the Pagoda Hotel and restaurant. Last year on May 1 they opened the C'est Si Bon showroom, and this May 1 they took over ownership of the Pacific Beach Hotel from Andre Tatibouet. Mrs. Hayashi, not to be outdone, gave birth to son Lance on the same day. May Day is "Say Hey" Day to the Hayashis. (May 44, 1971) ...

BOITE NEXT: "I found my boite," said Liza Minnelli as she entered J.B.'s Grille Sunday night. She had mentioned during her show Saturday that what she really would like to do is find a small hotel and sing to about 18 people like Mabel Mercer or Bobby Short. Sunday she got her chance -- only 18 or so people were in the place when she walked in and it quickly multiplied when word spread that Liza was in and SINGING. She joined Jimmy Borges and Ethel Azama on stage and tireless Liza was joined by boyfriend Desi Arnez Jr. on drums and her musical conductor Jack French on piano. It was a night to remember. Owners John and Rainee Barkhorn were on hand but manager Hans Strasser missed the action. "Just think," he mused, "some $25,000 worth of entertainment for free and that's the one night I take off." (April 24, 1973) ...

WHILE Judi Anderson was no doubt thrilled with winning the Miss USA title, her excitement couldn't match that of Bette Dawson, coordinator of the local contest Judi won. Dawson called local pals from the mainland fairly screaming with joy over the pageant's outcome, and reported that Judi's mother, Princess Kaiulani sportswear owner and designer Joan Anderson, was very ecstatic. Next: Miss World. (May 2, 1976) ... The third week in June should be a memorable one. Sunday, June 17, is Father's Day; Leonard Bernstein will be conducting the N.Y. Philharmonic on Monday at the Waikiki Shell; summer begins officially on Thursday, and on Saturday, the 23rd, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band of New Orleans will perform at the Shell. (April 29, 1979) ...

THE fact that the Hyatt Regency Maui wasn't quite ready for its grand opening last weekend came as no surprise to former Sports Illustrated exec editor Dick Johnston. He recalls two hotel premieres he attended while with S.I. in New York. "At the Capri in pre-Castro Havana," says Johnston, "the hot and cold water mains were switched, an error first flushed out by a travel writer with a brush of tourista." And at the Continental Hotel in Mexico City, no water -- hot or cold -- rose above the fifth floor. Said Johnston, "Try shaving with tequila sometime." (April 24, 1980) ...

FORMER "Hawaii Five-O" star Jack Lord leaves on Mother's Day for Taiwan where he'll be the guest of the government at the Golden Bell Awards -- Taiwan's equivalent of the Oscars. Not only has Lord been selected to present the best actress award, but he'll also receive an award from the Taiwan film academy. (April 30, 1981) ... Members of the Wananalua Church of Hana have formed an exercise class and full marks for the name they came up with for it: The Firm Believers! (May 1,1985)

SPEAKING of surprises, people who'd been invited to a going-away party for Richard Peck and Dutch Dickenson at Rex's Black Orchid Wednesday night certainly got one. The two, who are moving to Florida, introduced Dick Jensen to those assembled and he conducted a more-or-less impromptu marriage ceremony for the couple right on the spot. (Aprill 30, 1983) ...

TO celebrate National Lingerie Week, Liberty House is holding a series of events through Saturday. Themed "Intimacies Lingerie options for your busy lifestyle," there'll be demonstrations of something called "aromatherapy," an ancient healing art to revive the body. On Thursday and Saturday, Carolyn Bosanko will host informal modeling of her busters from BOS sexy player, and among the models are Miss Hawaii USA Heather Hays, her predecessor Kim Dygmon and former Miss Honolulu Lisa Clark. Men are welcome too. (April 28, 1992) ...
