join symphony in concert

Star-Bulletin staff

Winners of the Hawaii Youth Talent Showcase, a concerto competition to determine the most talented school-age orchestral musicians, will perform tomorrow in a concert with the Honolulu Symphony.

The musicians each studied and performed a classical concerto to play with the symphony. The orchestra will accompany each student in his or her concerto recital.

The winning students are:

>> Matthew Bow, cello (Punahou School, Grade 12): He started learning cello with Louise Ching when he was 6 and is currently the principal cellist in the Hawaii Youth Symphony and the Punahou Symphony and plays with various quartets and the Hawaii Suzuki String Tour Group. He performed with the Honolulu Symphony as a soloist in 1996 and 1999. In 2000, Bow won the Southwest Division of the Music Teacher National Association High School String Competition held in Las Vegas, and placed as the first runner-up in the 1999-2000 National MTNA High School String Competition in Minneapolis.
