Timely treats for mothers
and treasured secretaries


HERE'S a great suggestion for treating secretaries on Secretaries Week. Take yours to the Aloha Friday Luncheon Show at the Monarch Room of the Royal Hawaiian tomorrow from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. There'll be a Hawaiian style buffet and entertainment by Amy Hanaiali'i and the group Kapena ... Members of the group Kahala Moon have music in their blood, and so it is they're recognizing their mothers, the late Irmgard Aluli and Bina Mossman, at the Kahala Mall's Mother's Day Concert, 11 a.m. May 4 at Center Stage ... The funeral of the great Moe Keale will be held 6 to 7 p.m. Monday, with visitation before and after the service. Then at noon on May 4, there'll be a musical remembrance at the Hula Mound at Kuhio Beach, with scattering of ashes off Waikiki at sunset ...

BUSHMANIA has hit Northern California. No, nothing to do with the President, but it has to do with the arrival of ukulele whiz Eddie Bush. He's the guest artist of the Northern California Ukulele Festival Sunday in Hayward, Calif., Founder of the event is Hollis Baker, director of the 65-piece ukulele band. He's a nephew of Hawaiian composer Andy Cummings and cousin to Aunty Genoa Keawe. Bush will be performing in nine Bay Area cities during his five day tour ...

TOMORROW and Saturday there'll be a Duke Ellington review at the Civic Center Grounds outdoors, with music food and games all day. And it's free ... There's a new Little Red Riding Hood touring schools on Oahu with Lydia Knudsen being replaced by Tricia Marciel. Dinner with Dalton

LIEUTENANT Governor candidate Dalton Tanonaka is holding a community rally on Maui tonight, "Dinner with Dalton." Comic Mel Cabang and singer Glenn "Hana Boy" Pinho will be entertaining at the 5 to 7 p.m. buffet event at the Wailuku Community Center. Cabang's father and sister live on Maui, so he's excited about performing there. And Glenn's happy to go home to sing in front of his family and friends. Glenn's sister is Kauai Mayor Maryanne Kusaka ...

BACK in December, Hawaiian Airlines flew 600 New York City rescue workers and their families to Hawaii free for a post-9/11 vacation. Now the National Muscular Dystrophy Association saluted Hawaiian and CEO Paul Casey with its Hope Award, the highest award for community and humanitarian efforts, only the eighth time the award has been presented locally since 1967 ...

Sorry Gym

BACK in the 1970s, the DOE approved and constructed a gymnasium for Lahainaluna High School. One problem: It contained no lockers and no showers. Athletes must use the lockers and showers in the physical education department in a separate facility. To get to the showers and lockers, the sweaty athletes had to go outside. Many have taken to changing their clothes in the parking lot. Every gym constructed since Lahainaluna's has lockers and showers in the building. Maybe it's about time that the DOE break down and either put in showers or build a new facility ...
