Two officers shot at and killed a suspect who was trying to reverse out of the driveway of an Aiea home with a stolen car this morning, police said.

Honolulu Police Chief Lee Donohue said two officers were trying to stop the car and that one of the officers had reached into the car and was trying to take the keys out of the ignition and was being dragged by the car when the shooting occurred.

Each officer fired one shot, Donohue said.

The shooting occurred at a home on Kauhale Street near the Aiea Post Office at about 8:10 a.m.

Donohue said the officers were searching for the 28-year-old suspect, who had fled on foot from another location two blocks away.

He said the officers heard a woman scream and when they arrived at the house, they saw the suspect trying to get away in the woman's car.

The two officers were slightly injured in the incident, police said, but refused treatment.

Police said the incident started about 7 a.m. with a report of a suspicious vehicle near the Moanalua Golf Course.

The driver of the car, who was wanted on outstanding warrants, fled and led police on a short chase before it was ended because the suspect was driving dangerously.

Officers talked Pearl City police who were familiar with the suspect and the two officers were sent to check on the suspect's hangouts.
