Man indicted on charges of having sex with minor

DALLAS >> A businessman with addresses in Texas and Hawaii has been named in a six-count indictment accusing him of traveling overseas to have sex with a minor and of lying to obtain a passport to leave Thailand after authorities there had seized his passport.

A federal grand jury in Dallas returned the indictment Friday against Nicholas Bredimus, the U.S. attorney's office said yesterday.

The indictment accuses Bredimus of three counts of traveling in foreign commerce to engage in sexual activity with a minor, one count of offering to obtain control of a minor with the intent of promoting sexually explicit conduct to produce child pornography, making a false statement on a passport application and using a passport that was issued based on a false statement.

Bredimus, 52, has pleaded innocent to the charges.

Clarence Pacarro tapped as District Court judge

Clarence Pacarro, a former deputy city prosecutor, has been appointed as a Honolulu District Court judge.

Pacarro would fill the vacancy created by the retirement of I. Norman Lewis.

Pacarro has been in private law practice.

He also has been a deputy city corporation counsel and a per-diem judge for Honolulu District Family Court.

He received his law degree from Lewis and Clark Law School in Portland, Ore.

His appointment is subject to state Senate confirmation.

Road testing to affect Kalanianaole traffic

Road testing will occur on Kalanianaole Highway in East Oahu from 10 p.m. tonight to 2 a.m. tomorrow.

Equipment will test the grade on Ewa-bound lanes between West Hind Drive in Aina Haina and the H-1 freeway.

Officials of the state Department of Transportation advised motorists to anticipate slow-moving traffic.

Predawn power outage hits part of Big Island

Nearly 16,000 Big Island residents were without electricity for a brief period early this morning when a generator unexpectedly went off line.

Hawaii Electric Light Co. said that when the generator run by Hamakua Energy Partners tripped off line at 4:20 a.m. today, the power was cut off to protect the rest of the system.

Power was restored by 4:32 a.m.

Cause of the generator trip is under investigation.

It's the second large outage in a little over a week.

On April 13, a power outage affected 20,822 Big Island customers after a problem with generators at Hamakua Energy Partners.

Head-on car accident kills Kaneohe woman

A 52-year-old Kaneohe woman died yesterday after a head-on traffic collision on Kahekili Highway near the Valley of the Temples Memorial Park.

Police said the woman was a passenger in a car traveling toward Kahaluu just before 5 p.m. when a pickup truck traveling in the opposite direction crossed into the car's lane.

The woman was taken in critical condition to Castle Medical Center, where she later died. The driver of the car, a 54-year-old Kaneohe man, was taken to Queen's Medical Center, also in critical condition. The driver of the pickup truck, a 52-year-old Kaneohe man, and his passenger, a 23-year-old Kaneohe man, were taken to Queen's in good condition.

Police nab man believed to have robbed 3 banks

Honolulu police arrested a 38-year-old Waikiki man whom they believe may be responsible for three bank robberies earlier this month. The robberies include one at the Ward Avenue branch of Bank of Hawaii on April 8, another at the North King Street American Savings Bank on April 15 and one at the Wahiawa branch of American Savings on California Avenue on Friday.

Each of the robberies took place between 9 a.m. and noon and involved the suspect telling bank tellers that he had a weapon, though none was ever seen. Police arrested the suspect on a bench warrant yesterday at 5:30 p.m. at his Kuhio Avenue apartment.

Woman allegedly played role in robbery of tourist

Honolulu police arrested a 21-year-old Ewa Beach woman yesterday for her alleged part in a robbery, burglary and kidnapping case. Police said the victim was a 38-year-old man from Yokohama, Japan, who was staying at a Waikiki hotel.

Police said just after midnight yesterday, the suspect knocked at the victim's Nahua Avenue hotel room door. Police said the victim looked out through the door's peephole and saw the suspect, whom he had met earlier that day, and opened the door.

Police said it was then that two males burst into the room, held a handgun to the victim's head and tied him up with duct tape. Police said the suspects then fled with the victim's belongings.

Police said the victim was able to notify hotel security, who managed to prevent the female from escaping. Police are still looking for the two men involved in the case.

Victim in fatal accident on Pali Highway identified

The Honolulu Medical Examiner has identified the man who died after crashing his truck into a tree off Pali Highway Sunday as Russell Montalbo, 49, of Waipahu.

Police said Montalbo was traveling town-bound on the Honolulu side of the tunnel about 4 a.m. when his truck veered of the highway and crashed into a tree in the grassy median.

Big Island man dies after car crashes into wall

Big Island police said a 67-year-old Kailua-Kona man died in a one-car accident Friday in Keauhou, North Kona. Police said that sometime prior to 9:25 p.m., the victim had been driving a 1995 Ford four-door sedan west on Kamehameha III Road when he stopped and slumped back in his seat. The vehicle's passenger got out of the car to provide assistance, but the car rolled and struck a stone wall, police said.

Police said the victim was taken to the Kona Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 10:08 p.m. Traffic Enforcement Unit officers have initiated a coroner's inquest case and ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
