Hilo hammers HPU
for first series sweep

In all the years of softball at Hawaii-Hilo, it had never swept the season series with Hawaii Pacific.

Until yesterday, when the Vulcans beat the Sea Warriors 5-1, 1-0 in a home doubleheader.

Kristine Kahoalii held HPU (20-20) to three hits in the opening game and Taysha Anderson shut them out in the second. Kayla Kahuli singled with the bases loaded in the first game.

Abby Padasdao drove in Hilo's only run in the second game.

Figueira headed to Fullerton for track

Sacred Hearts Academy's Kelly Figueira has signed a national letter of intent to attend Cal State Fullerton on a track and field scholarship.

Figueira set the state long jump record last year with a leap of 19 feet, 3.25 inches and is the reigning state champion in the long jump and 100-meter dash. She also finished second in the 200-meters at last year's state championships.

Figueira will continue her athletic career under the guidance of CSF assistant Mike Powell, the current men's world record holder in the long jump.

"Kelly is an aggressive and explosive jumper who will immediately contribute to the goals we have for our program, and I look forward to working with her throughout her career as a Titan," Powell said.

Hawaii basketball coach Riley Wallace will be the subject of a celebrity roast to benefit the Epilepsy Foundation of Hawaii May 11.

The roast, dubbed "The Life of Riley," features a celebrity panel including the Star-Bulletin's Paul Arnett. City prosecutor Peter Carlisle will serve as master of ceremonies.

For those interested in attending, contact Sheila Bierwert or Carla Evans at 528-3058.

Rainbows to sign in: Wallace will be signing his book, The Rainbow Circle of Excellence, at Borders in Ward Center at noon and Borders in Waikele at 4 p.m. today.

Predrag Savovic, Mindaugus Burneika and Mike McIntyre are also expected to attend the signing.

Vulcans swept to close season

The Hawaii-Hilo baseball team used seven pitchers yesterday, but Pacific only used two to end the Vulcans' season on the wrong end of a sweep, 10-3 and 13-1.

The Vulcans finish the season 10-37-1.

Keola Park went 3-for-6 in the two games but could not catch Kaliko Oligo for the team batting title. Oligo ended the season hitting .335 to Park's .318. Park did keep the RBI title though, driving in one to stay ahead of Johnny Dudoit 25-24.
