Instigator of fatal conflict
gets 10-year prison term

Circuit Judge Wilfred Wata-nabe sentenced Brandon Lizardo to 10 years in prison for severely beating a Waipio man in August 2000.

Deputy Prosecutor Chris Van Marter said Lizardo deserved the sentence because he touched off events that led to the shooting death of a man described as a "good Samaritan."

"If it wasn't for Lizardo provoking and starting the attack on Brian Chamberlain, Dino Arado would have had no reason to go to his neighbor's house to see if he needed help, and he would not be dead today," Van Marter said yesterday.

Lizardo, 24, received 10 years in prison for the assault, and five years for first-degree terroristic threatening, the two terms to run at the same time.

He was also ordered to pay $9,023.76 in restitution.

The parole board will decide his minimum term.

Lizardo, brothers Joseph and John Poomaihealani and their girlfriends went to visit a former co-worker who lived next door to Arado. Instead, they got into a conflict with tenant Chamberlain.

Lizardo held a 9 mm gun to Chamberlain's neck, threatened to blow his head off and then struck Chamberlain with so much force he was knocked unconscious.

Joseph Poomaihealani III was convicted of shooting Arado and was sentenced March 13 to life in prison with the possibility of parole.

His brother John Poomaihealani was sentenced to 10 years in prison for beating Chamberlain and threatening another man.

The father of the Poomaihealani brothers was in court yesterday and thanked Van Marter for pushing for Lizardo's 10-year sentence. Joseph Poomaihealani Jr. had criticized Lizardo for bringing the gun into the house and pistol-whipping Chamberlain, for which he said his sons should not have been blamed.
