Punahou rallies past MPI

Three Punahou relievers shut out Mid-Pacific for six innings as the Buffanblu spotted the Owls a five-run lead and then came all the way back for a 6-5 Interscholastic League of Honolulu baseball win yesterday at Ala Wai Field.

Control problems by Punahou starter Mark Veneri and timely hits by the Owls' Ryan Basco, Jonathan Hee and Justin Kashiwaeda had Punahou looking up at their second large early deficit of the week.

"We were down 6-0 to Maryknoll on Thursday and came back so I knew the kids wouldn't panic," said Punahou coach Eric Kadooka. "We know we can score runs and knew we could chip away."

Mid-Pacific threatened in the fifth and six innings but were ultimately done in by three errors and great relief work by the Punahou bullpen.

Said Kadooka: "Kurt Fujitani has done the job twice for us already, comes in and throws strikes and gives us a chance. He and Matthew Oda were definitely key for us today."

Punahou scored one in the first and third and took the lead in the fourth when Kyle Seminara's single scored Veneri.

"I just thought about the stuff I worked on in practice yesterday," said Seminara. "Keep my head still and look the ball in."

The Owls started the season 7-0, but have now lost three of their last four. Said Punahou assistant Matt Apana: "They don't look any different than they did earlier, sometimes the ILH is just weird like that."
