Legislature 2002

House asks Pentagon
to keep isle status quo

Star-Bulletin staff

The state House passed a resolution requesting the U.S. Department of Defense to maintain the current structure of the United States Pacific Command.

The resolution comes after recent announcements of plans by the Pentagon to switch command over U.S. military units on the West Coast from Hawaii to the mainland. The new proposed structure of the West Coast forces would possibly cut direct ties the units have across the Pacific, U.S. Sen. Daniel Inouye said last week.

Copies of the resolution may be sent to President George W. Bush, the Secretary of Defense, the members of the Hawaii congressional delegation, the governor of Guam, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the Commander in Chief, United States Pacific Command.

House Concurrent Resolution 121, House Draft 1 originally urged businesses to give U.S. military personnel and their families kamaaina discounts in Hawaii. It passed the House Friday and was sent to the Senate.

Not all local businesses recognize a military identification card as eligibility to receive a kamaaina discount, lawmakers said. Senate Concurrent Resolution 106 dealing with the kamaaina discount was passed by the Senate and sent to the House Thursday.
