1970: Central YMCA draws
gatherings of differing minds

TWO conflicting events tomorrow are likely to draw from different crowds anyway: Bruce Stark and Sheridan Ing are holding groundbreaking ceremonies for the Yacht Harbor Towers at the site of the Central YMCA grounds, and certain Central "Y" members -- spearheaded by Lippy Espinda and Jack Mizuha -- are meeting at the Ilikai to protest the destruction of the gym, pool and athletic club to make way for the building. (April 14, 1970) ... A large turnout is expected tonight at the home of George Santos in Kalama Valley on this, the last day of his lease. Protesters to his eviction by Bishop Estate will be on hand, and a party atmosphere is almost assured by the presence of a country-western group, the Westwind Band, featuring the irrepressible Neil Abercrombie on vocals. (April 20, 1971) ...

ALEXANDRA the Great has two huge blisters -- don't get ahead of us now -- the problem stemming from wearing two left shoes at her Dunes show the other night. She says the mix-up came because she was so excited about the huge crowd there to see her show, but we suspect it was because she couldn't see her feet. (April 19, 1973) ... Sitting in Matteo's Friday night, the columnist pointed to the man who just may be the greatest baseball player ever and said to a lady companion, "Look, there's Joe DiMaggio." Sensing she knew nothing about sports, he continued. "Do you know what he's famous for?" "Sure," came the reply. "He was married to Marilyn Monroe." "Anything else?" "Of course," said the woman. "Selling Mr. Coffees." The matter dropped. (April 16, 1975) ...

AFTER attending his fifth party in the parking area of the still-abuilding Honolulu Club Saturday night, attorney Rick Fried quipped, "I don't even care if they finish the building or not -- I'm getting kind of used to the parking lot." (April 14, 1980) ... First it was Nureyev at the Shell, and now it's Pavlova in a shell, actually. Pavlova is an elegant Australian dessert which the folks from Down Under are displaying at the Hotel and Restaurant Expo today and tomorrow at the Sheraton-Waikiki. (April 15, 1981) ... A surprise visitor to the Greek Easter Mass Saturday at midnight at Sts. Constantine and Helen church was perhaps the best-known Greek in America, Telly Savalas, currently visiting the islands. (April 20, 1982) ...

DRESSED in grubby shorts and doing some cleaning up at Murphy's Bar & Grill Saturday was owner Don Murphy and a friend, Bill Bender. As they were preparing to leave for the evening, a liveried chauffeur showed up at the door and asked, "Are you open?" Turns out a wedding party of 30, all from San Francisco, were fresh from the nuptials at Waimea Falls Park and eager to kill a couple of hours productively before taking a Windjammer cruise. Murphy deadpanned, "We're just the cleanup crew, but we hate the guys that own this place, so come on in and we'll set you up." The party that ensued was a blast, with Murphy finally owning up that it was his saloon and nobody was going to get into trouble over the place being open. (April 16, 1988) ...

YES indeed, folks, that familiar-looking blonde in a black body-fitting top, rolled-up jeans and boots enjoying nachos and banana-and-papaya margaritas at Jose's Mexican Cafe & Cantina in Kaimuki was none other than actress Christine Applegate, who plays sexy Kelly Bundy in the sitcom "Married ... with Children." The actress promises she'll be back in Honolulu very soon. (April 19, 1993) ... When Al Souza Jr. is inducted into the Hawaii Golf Hall of Fame on April 28 at the Hawaii Prince Hotel, you might not be able to tell the Al Souzas without a program. On hand will be the new Hall of Famer's father, Al Souza Sr., who's 85 and who you may recall is something of a golfing legend himself, having shot his age when he was 79. Al Jr. is 55 and his son, Al Souza III, will also be there with his infant son, Al Souza IV, who was born on March 30. All are live and well, and Al IV is already experimenting with an interlocking grip on his rattle. (April 15, 1996) ...
