‘You Can’t Take It With You’
at HPU guarantees laughs

THERE were some gorgeous babes in and around the Ocean Resort Hotel in Waikiki recently. Singer Sarina Paris was vacationing here before leaving for Europe where she'll tour with Destiny's Child. Also at the hotel were international models Kaila Yu and Aiko Tanaka. I checked them out on Google (my favorite Internet search engine) and found the Paris site (sarinaparis.com) was elegantly made and featured some of her singing. Both Yu and Tanaka also have Web sites but on those are photos of them in various stages of undress, and for a fee, you can see even more. I passed. The free portion of Yu's Web site said she was heading for Hawaii to promote her new CD single, "For More Info." She wrote, "I can't wait; I have never been there before and every single person that I have talked to has promised me that I will have the time of my life." ...

IT isn't every day I see a play not written by Shakespeare that was originally produced before I was born, but such is the case of Kaufman & Hart's zany comedy, "You Can't Take It With You." It's currently playing at Hawaii Pacific University and again director Joyce Maltby has assembled an ensemble of actors -- more than a stageful of them -- and brought out the fact that some things don't change. The title is still a truism. You can take quite a few laughs away with you, however ... Lanai & Augie and their "Comedy Shack" is taking a break this week and will return to the Dole Cannery Ballroom April 19 ... Not only did the incredible Shaolin Warriors sell out the Hawaii Theatre for five performances, but opening night, a benefit for Palolo Chinese Home, raised $8,000 ...

Moving far and near

IT'S been a moving year for talented graphic designer Clarence Lee. His "Year of the Horse" stamp -- one of 12 designed for the U.S. Postal Service -- is moving mail across the country and the world. And those striking new yellow maile and ginger bus designs for TP Transportation, which Lee created, are moving visitors around Honolulu. You can bet things will keep moving for Lee ...

MALAMA, the Aveda Lifestyle Salon Spa is doing its thing for the Hawaii Nature Center on April 21. Malama is holding a $25 "Cut-A-Thon" and a $1-per-minute "Massage-A-Thon" (with a 10-minute maximum limit per person) at both its Ala Moana Center and Manoa locations. Malama owner Mary Suitor says on that day she'll only accept cash and checks made out to Hawaii Nature Center. It's part of her annual celebration of Earth Month each April ...

Roasted Lee

WHEN you think of Cal Lee, you think of St. Louis football. But before Lee became the winning-est coach around, he was outstanding alumnus of the year at St. Patrick School way back in 1960. Now that Lee is stepping down, he's going to be roasted at a benefit banquet for St. Patrick's on April 19 at the Sheraton-Waikiki. And look at the lineup of those salivating to roast Mr. Lee: Tony Guerrero, executive VP of First Hawaiian Bank, UH coach June Jones, Kahuku football coach Siuaki Livai, Channel 5's Jim Leahey (who was brutal when I was "stir-fried" at the Hawaii Theatre a few years ago), and the Star-Bulletin's own Dave Reardon. Entertainment will be headed by comic Frank DeLima, who's sure to have a few barbs of his own for the roastee ...
