Sea Warriors taken down

The No. 17 Hawaii Pacific women's tennis team was taken apart by No. 4 Barry (Fla.) in the championship of the Xenia Anastasidou tournament at Pomona, Calif., yesterday.

The Sea Warriors lost, 8-1, with Lori Matsunaga getting their lone win. She beat Bojana Miladinovic, 6-1, 5-7, 6-3, from the fourth spot.

Stephanie Koracic, Fleurette Miranti, Dora Holdarova, Summer Terry and Shakti Stream all lost their matches in straight sets for the Sea Warriors, who were swept in the three doubles matches.

Hawaii wrestlers bring home ribbons

Four local wrestlers placed in the top five at the Reno World of Wrestling Championships over the weekend.

Chanel Vivas of Kahuku brought home third place in the 105-pound weight class, followed by Patrick Stachel (171 pounds) of Kamehameha in fourth and Kahuku's Barry Ashberry (130) and Christian Kikuchi (140) in fifth.

Kikuchi put together a 5-2 record, with his losses coming to the eventual champion and runner-up.

The tournament featured 2,640 wrestlers from 37 states.

Chaminade, Hilo lose in quarterfinals

The Hawaii-Hilo and Chaminade softball teams both lost in first-round games in the Division II Tournament of Champions' bronze bracket yesterday.

The Vulcans lost, 7-4, to Cal State San Bernardino, while Chaminade fell, 1-0, to Western Oregon.

Hilo pounded out 10 hits, but committed four errors which led to three runs. Kristine Kahoalii started and gave up all the runs. Nancy Vega, Wendy Layton and Leinani Hashida paired hits for the Vulcans.

Melissa Marquez threw a four-hitter for the Silverswords, but lost 1-0 when Western Oregon executed a suicide squeeze in the fifth inning.

Hilton takes his show to Drexel after JUCO

Former Hawaii point guard David Hilton has committed to Drexel after polishing his game at Chipola (Fla.) Community College the past year.

Hilton selected Drexel over Hofstra, Akron and New Hampshire after averaging eight points and five assists in junior college.

He averaged 2.3 points and 2.7 assists per game in 2000 for the Rainbows.
